Description
A US'IRALIA Patents Act 1990 COM~PLETE SPECIFICATION INAOVA TTON PA TENT IKPROVE>'EJ T IN DE6 EfDIfNG BA3Y CARRIAGES The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me: IMPROVEMENT IN DESCENDING BABY CARHIAGES This invention relates to the improvement of devices for an easy descent of stairs by baby carriages.
Women everywhere, when on their own pushing a baby carriage, often face the dilemma: How to find the easiest way for the descent of a flight of stairs. It is embarrassing to seek assistance from the passing strange men. If no help is available the baby has to be lifted out of the pram. With only one hnnd free the lady is forced to control the swaying carriage on its way downstairs.
The most unpleasant way is to leave the baby in the pram, fully exposed to the heavy thuds accompanying each step on the way down.
All these methods are clearly repulsed by the baby's loud protestations.
It is the object of this invention to overcome such problems, which is accomplished in the manner described below. The attached drawings will assist in the understanding of the invention.
FIG 1 During the descent the usual function of t'bbck wheels is suspended. A pair of short skis 1 substitutes the forward motion, while the front wheels pass freely above the stairs. The skis are gliding over the edres of the stairs, the back wheels touching the stairs only in a change of the stairs' cradient. By using this method the baby and the guardian have a quiet descent, without any inconvenience.
The transversely joined 8 skis are revolvable, attached to the back wheels' axle 5, or the pram's rear frame. Although joined at their front ends the skis leave ample space for an unhindered leg movement of the operator. The front vertical extension of the skis includes also a round revolving shaft 7, with an arm 2 at eac' end.
FIG 3 In the inoperative position both the skis and the arms are facing inward. The serrated arms rest against brackets 3 attached to the pram's rear frame. During the changing to the operative position the arms slide along the brackets till their selected notches reach the brackets and fasten unto them.
2 FIG 2 The changing ofthe positions is done instantly by a slight foot pressure on the pedal 6, situated in the middle of the shaft 7.
The speedy reaction to the pressure is done by the springs 4, connecting the skis to the brackets. The springs hold the skis in the inward position when at rest.
The material used has to be light but sturdy. The most imoortant part is the underside of the skis which has to have a very high gliding, non-scratch croperties.
