Abstract

The invention relates to a method for carrying out an NOx regeneration of an NOx storage-type catalytic converter mounted in an exhaust gas channel of an internal combustion engine, whereby the internal combustion engine can be operated in different operational modes, and exhaust gas is returned into the induction air of the internal combustion engine during at least one of the operational modes. According to the invention, an initiation of the NOx regeneration is preceded by a reduction of an exhaust gas return rate or by a shut down of an exhaust gas return, and the NOx generation is carried out with a reduced exhaust gas return rate or without exhaust gas return. A rapid switching over into the regeneration area is thus attained without misfiring and a short regeneration time achieved.
