Abstract

A method and apparatus for controlling growth of an organism in a nutrient medium comprising adding to the nutrient medium one or more gaseous materials which are consumed by the organism, or which do not affect the organism; monitoring the one or more gaseous materials, or monitoring one or more gaseous materials produced by the organism; and controlling the addition of the one or more gaseous materials in response to the one or more of the monitored gaseous materials to keep the growth within predetermined limits; wherein the one or more added and/or produced gaseous materials are monitored in the exhaust gas of the nutrient medium.
