TITLED
"TOOL" MK 2 The invention is described in the following statement: LDVIO mramme 'Tool" MK 2 Page 2 of 13 13/12/01 13:16
INTRODUCTION
Title: Tool MK2 Field of the invention This invention relates to a tool.
Background to the invention Solid tyres are known for use in a number of applications, including with respect to forklift trucks and various forms of digging and grading machines and front end loaders.
These solid tyres are usually pressed onto two part rims by advancing one of the two part rims from one side of the tyre and advancing the other part of the two part rim from the other side and applying substantial pressure; often with presses of 150 tonne capacity or greater.
When the two parts are pressed to the tyre, the two parts are then secured together and a wheel is formed provided with a solid tyre, which can then be mounted to a vehicle as desired.
While other means of securing such solid tyres to rims are known, they are not as satisfactory as the method using a large press.
However, since such a large press has been used, the tyre is firmly held by the rim parts, and when it becomes necessary to perform some sort of service, it is quite difficult to disassemble the tyre and the rim parts.
uavid Kramme "Tool" MK 2 Page 3 of 13 13/12/01 13:16 SUMMARY OF INVENTION Tool set for removing first half rim from solid tyres.
The tool set comprises three pins and three right-angle cleats manufactured from mild steel. (See description on Page The three cleats are forced between the unbolted rim halves in three symetrical positions so that the holes in the cleats are in the centre of three of the stud holes in the rim.
The tyre rim cleat assembly is then placed Star Press on the twelve inch compression ring, flat side down.
(Refer diagram on Page H.Frame Press on a circular band large enough to hold the tyre, yet allow rim half being removed to pass through. (Refer diagram on page 11).
When set up in either of above positions, the three pins are inserted into the holes of the cleats, then Star Press The 10 inch fitting cone is placed on head ends of the pins in as near central position as possible. The Star inverted is wound down onto the cone. The press is operated, applying pressure on the pins, which in turn applies pressure on the cleats, which then push the lower half of the rim from the tyre onto the cavity created by the twelve inch compression ring under assembly.
H.Frame Press The press is operated carefully down onto the heads of the pins so that they (the pins) remain perpendicular to the cleats. The pressure exerted on the pins puts pressure on the cleats, which in turn pushes the lower rim half into cavity created by the circular band under assembly.
David Kramme 13/12/01 "Tool" MK 2 Page 4 of 13 13:16 DESCRIPTION OF THE TOOL KIT (Principally as an aid to Star Press).
The tool kit comprises three pins and three right-angle cleats manufactured from mild steel.
Diagram on Page 12.
The pins are 100mm long and 14mm/16mm in diameter and are capped one end with a 40mm square (or round) 8mm thick head.
The other end has a length of 20 mm turned down to a diameter of 10mm for two pins. The pins all have a hole drilled just below head (see "Storage" on Page 13, Diagram 6).
One pin per set has a 25mm step down which has a hole drilled through 5mm from end. (See "Storage" on Page 13, Diagram 6).
Diagram on Page 12.
The cleats are mm angle iron.
The inside of the angle is strengthened and weighted with a piece of 15mm steel rod welded on the inside of bend. The arm of the angle iron to be forced between rim halves to be parted from tyre (called "wedge arm") has extreme end machined to a point and the corners rounded off to facilitate easier insertion between rim halves.
from pointed end of wedge arm is an lmm centrally drilled hole.
Notes on Description The normal kit will contain 16mm pins which enable 12" rim halves to be removed.
14mm pins can be used on 10" and 9" rims.

INSTRUCTIONS:
METHOD OF USE 12" SPLIT RIM REMOVAL TOOL KIT PROVISIONAL NO. PR 3820 The tyre rim assembly that has to be dismantled is placed on firm surface with all rim bolts removed.
With most of the very difficult elastic type tyres, when bolts are removed a space opens up between rim halves. If not wide enough to insert cleat, hammer normal tyre lever between rim halves near stud hole in rim.
Then, whilst holding cleat in self locking pliers on plain arm, hammer wedge arm into gap where the hole in wedge arm lines up centrally with stud hole of rim.
Gentle taps more effective than violent blows.
(Refer "Set Up" on Page 12, Diagram Do this for the 3 cleats, spreading them to each second stud hole.
Remove tyre lever.
The tyre rim cleat assembly is then placed Star Press on the twelve inch tyre compression ring, flat side down. (Refer Page 10, Diagram 1).
H.Frame Press on a circular band large enough to hold the tyre, yet allow rim half being removed to pass through. (Refer Page 11, Diagram When set up in either of above positions, the three pins are inserted into the holes of the cleats, then Star Press the 10 inch fitting cone is placed on head ends of the pins in as near central position as possible. The Star inverted is wound down onto the cone. The press is operated, applying pressure on the pins, which in turn applies pressure on the cleats, which then push the lower half of the rim from the tyre onto the cavity created by the twelve inch fitting ring under assembly.
H.Frame Press the press is operated carefully down onto the heads of the pins so that they (the pins) remain perpendicular to the cleats. The pressure exerted on the pins puts pressure on the cleats, which in turn pushes the lower rim half into cavity created by the circular band under assembly.
David Kramme 13/12/01 'Tool" MK 2 Page 6 of 13 13:16 Storage when not in use Refer Diagram 6 on Page 13.
Pins are joined together with a reinforced plastic cable fed through small hole drilled just below head.
The cleats are, via hole drilled in wedge arm, fed onto pin with longer step down, and held into position with spring pin through hole in step down.

Claims (2)
1. The removal of solid tyres from rims has been achieved in many ways, almost entirely with tools not purpose built for the job, and involve generally a lever action. This is a purpose built tool.
2. The Tool MK II is a purpose built tool kit using an adaptation of a pin and plate combination to push the rim from the tyre. Because the rim half removal is achieved in an even fashion, there is little or no rim distortion and fixed rim stud damage as is common with existing methods of removal.
