Description

A temperature sensing assembly integrated into or attached to a power chord.
This invention is to enable the ambient temperature of a room to be measured accurately for the purposes of controlling a room heating/cooling device. This is achieved by incorporating the sensor into the power chord thus allowing the temperature sensor to be placed a reasonable distance away from the unit without causing undue nuisance to the user(s) of the appliance. Implementation of this would involve a DC power supply for the control referenced to the neutral line of the mains power supply. This would enable a thermistor/thermocouple to be connected relative to the neutral line and thus a single wire can be used to feedback the current signal. The thermal device would likely be best placed in the housing of the power plug (ideally in a small window) to ensure that it was not affected by heating of the wires. A buffer would likely need to be used at the plug end in high current applications (or at minimum a terminal block) to reduce thermal conduction to the legs of the thermal device. It may also be necessary to buffer the received signal at the control side of the thermal assembly to ensure that noise did not get coupled directly to the CPU. Neither of these steps were necessary for a 1500W, 220VAC appliance using relay switching. The above description is merely illustrative of the application of the principles of the present invention and are not limiting. Numerous other arrangements which employ the principles of the invention and which fall within its spirit and scope may be readily devised by those skilled in the art.
Accordingly, the invention is not limited by the foregoing description, but only limited by the scope of the foregoing claims.
