Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION INNOVATION PATENT A DEVICE AND STRATEGY FOR THE UTILIZATION OF OLFACTORY CUEING FOR ENHANCED AFFECT COGNITIVE AND PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it know to me: 19-02-02 16:54 ID P-04 The innovation introduces a device that emits odour/aroma and maybe combined with a material that when applied to the surface of the skin provides biofeedback by means of colour change in response to temperature and/or skin conductivity.
The innovation also relates to improvements in the procedures and strategies used to enhance affect, cognition and physical performance specifically incorporating the use of fragrance/odour devices or therapies..
For many people the desire or need to modify, enhance, replicate and/or accelerate performance in all manner of human endeavours is paramount.
Many strategies and procedures exist in the field of aroma therapy promoting the enhancement of a range of cognitive skills, behaviours and emotional states, eg concentration, alertness, sleep, anxiety reduction, relaxation etc; Within the field of aromatherapy the 'aroma' is delivered through a variety of sources, usually involving the inhalation of the fragrances obtained from a variety of natural and synthetic sources in the form of essential oils. Methods of delivering the 'aroma' include such methods as oil burners, the dilution of oils within massage oils, imbedded in candles applied to clothing or swabs of cotton wool etc These proposals have the following disadvantages:- 1. The do not supply any device, method or strategy that supplies feedback to the user that physiological/psychological change is occurring.
2. They do not specific a strategy to facilitate the utilization of the aroma/odour to promote changes in cognition, affect or behaviour.
3. They often promote the use of specific aromas/odours as effecting particular psychological states, eg cognitive functions eg basil concentration behaviours eg lavender sleep emotional states eg sandalwood anxiety.
Review of scientific literature shows there is no evidence to confirm that specified odours are responded to similarly by different individuals, similarly there is no evidence to show particular psychological states are induced by specific odours.
19-02-02 16:54 These problems are overcome with the current innovation/invention, which provides strategy and procedure guidelines (and in some instances biofeedback) for the utilization of aromas/odours as a trigger/cue for influencing cognition, affect or behaviour.
Additionally our product presents aroma/odour in a unique manner.
In one of the forms the aroma/odour is presented in a clear adhesive strip/shape that is easily stuck to the skin of the human body. The strip has a second fine peel off layer that when removed allows the aroma/odour imbedded in the strip to be released and utilized.
In another form the odour/aroma is presented in conjunction with a material that responds to skin conductivity and /or temperature by changing colour. This colour change acts as a form of biofeedback indicating changes in level of arousal which are often associated with changes in anxiety. The biofeedback material and the adhesive aroma/odour material may both be configured in an array of shapes and sizes to suit individual needs.
In another form the aroma/odour may be housed in a device either carried or worn be the user, eg a pen or sunglasses may have the aroma/odour affixed on, or within their structure, or the user may wear for example a watch or piece of jewellery that has the/aroma/odour either affixed or housed in it's structure.
The biological feedback and the aroma/odour shapes maybe made of any suitable material, such as plastic, adhesive tapes, invisible skin, wax coated material or cotton shapes in a variety of configurations.
To assist with understanding the invention, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings which show three examples of the invention.

The aroma/odour device of claim 2 combines the device of claim 1 with material CLW that responds (by changing colour) to temperature and or skin conductivity, thus offering an additional biofeedback advantage to the aroma/odour device of claim 1. C"IK4 The aroma/odour device and strategy of claim 3 is adapted to be worn or carried by the user in a range of accessories, eg sunglasses, pens, watches, jewellery.
