Description

ADHESIVE BACKED PRICE CHANNEL WITH GUIDE BAR
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The invention relates to price channels of the kind which are attached along the front of a product-display shelf, such as in supermarkets and the like, to carry labels or signs indicative of products on the shelf. Price channels of this nature are commonly plastic extrusions and may either clip onto the front of a shelf, or may have an adhesive back to be secured directly against the front edge of a shelf. The present invention is particularly concerned with the latter kind of price channel in which problems may occur if a price channel is not mounted accurately in position along the front of a shelf.
For example, a price channel might be mounted so that part or all of the top edge portion of the price channel projects above the shelf. When removing articles from the shelf, it is then possible to bump and dislodge the price channel. Similarly, if the price channel is too low it can be dislodged by contact with articles being removed from a shelf below. Further, mounting the known adhesive-backed price channels may be somewhat time consuming if accurate positioning and levelling is to be achieved. If such positioning and levelling is not achieved, either of the above problems may result or the price channel may simply be mounted in an aesthetically unpleasant position.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an adhesive-backed price channel which, inter alia, obviates the above problems.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to the invention, an adhesive-backed price channel of the kind referred to, which may be a plastic extrusion with the adhesive applied in known manner during manufacture, is provided along the back with a guide bar or locator rib to engage against an appropriate guide surface of a shelf, conveniently its lower edge, when attaching the channel to the shelf, and provide a location guide for properly positioning the price channel prior to final adhesive attachment.
The guide bar may extend part-way. or all the way along the back of the price channel (an extruded price channel will have the guide bar extending all the way) and may be appropriately positioned at any location height-wise of the price channel, conveniently along its lower edge. The invention is applicable to price channels with or without a transparent front cover.
Provision of the guide bar enables a user rapidly to attach the price channel to a shelf in proper position simply by engaging the guide bar along the appropriate edge of the shelf and then pressing the price channel into adhesive contact with the shelf.
Additional features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the ensuing description and claims read in conjunction with the attached drawings.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a price channel according to the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view showing the manner of attachment of a price channel to a product-display shelf.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
A plastic price-channel 10 is formed by extrusion in known manner and cut to length as determined by its end use. The price channel has a front panel 12 of transparent or translucent plastic which is formed as a coextrusion with the price channel also in known manner, the two elements being joined along their common bottom edge. In use, adhesive labels can be applied to the front of the cover or non-adhesive labels can be fitted behind the cover.
Along its back edge, the price channel has a strip of contact adhesive 14, again in known manner, normally covered by release paper 16. According to the invention the price channel also has a rearwardly extending guide bar 18 formed along its bottom edge as part of the extrusion. Typical dimensions for the price channel are: height 1 9/32", width of adhesive 1/2", and width of guide bar 1/8".
The method of mounting the price channel along a shelf front is shown in Figure 2. After removing the release paper 16, the guide bar is engaged along the bottom edge of shelf 20, arrow A, in order to properly locate and align the price channel, and the price channel is then simply pressed into adhesive engagement with the shelf front as indicated by arrow B. It is evident that the guide bar provides a means for quickly and accurately ensuring proper positioning of the price channel. As shown in the drawings, the guide bar may be appropriately angled relative to the price channel to suit the profile of the shelf.
While the guide bar is shown along the bottom edge of the price channel, in other applications it might be located at another location height-wise of the price channel. Also, the invention is applicable to price channels without a front cover.
While only a preferred embodiment f the invention has been described herein in detail, the invention is not limited thereby and modifications are possible within the scope of the attached claims.

Claims (11)

WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:
1. An adhesive-backed price channel for attachment along a shelf front to receive labelling indicative of products on the shelf wherein the price channel has a rearwardly extending guide bar for engaging against a guide surface of the shelf to position and align the price channel prior to adhesively securing same to the shelf.
2. A price channel as claimed in claim 1, wherein the guide bar is located along a bottom edge of the price channel.
3. A price channel as claimed in claim 1, wherein the guide bar extends all the way along the length of the price channel.
4. A price channel as claimed in claim 1, which includes an at least partially transparent front cover.
5. A price channel as claimed in claim 1, in the form of an extrusion wherein the guide bar is a part of the extrusion.
6. In combination with a product display shelf, a price channel secured by adhesive along a front surface of the shelf wherein the price channel includes a rearwardly extending guide bar engaged along a guide surface of the shelf whereby the price channel is positioned and aligned relative to the shelf.
7. A combination as defined in claim 6, wherein the guide surface comprises a bottom edge of the shelf.
8. A combination as defined in claim 6, wherein the guide bar extends along a bottom edge of the price channel.
9 . A combination as defined in claim 8, wherein the guide surface comprises a bottom edge of the shelf.
10. A combination as defined in claim 6, wherein the price channel has an at least partially transparent cover.
11. A combination as defined in claim 9, wherein the guide bar is angled relative to the price channel to conform with a profile of the shelf.
