Abstract

Two parts (18, 20) which can be displaced vertically one inside the other, of which one is attached to the backrest and the other to the support construction, can be fixed by a locking device in different positions relative to each other. The upper backrest bearing part (18), which is bent at an angle at its upper end for attachment to the rear side of the backrest, has an oval cross-section and bears two slide rods (24) in its interior. The free lower end of the slide rods (24) bears a ball connecting member (26) for receiving a locking ball (44). Between the two slide rods (24), the upper backrest bearing part (18) has a vertical switch rod (34) which is spring-loaded upwards and extends from the interior of the ball connecting member (26) up to the unlocking pusher (32) situated at the top. The latter projects in the region of the bend of the upper backrest bearing part (18) upwards over its covering (22, 30). The tubular lower backrest bearing part (20) likewise has an oval cross-section and receives the slide rods (24) together with the ball connecting member (26) and switch rod (34) in its interior provided with a multiple catch device (48) for the locking ball (44). <IMAGE>
