Abstract

For the forging of workpieces with a pronounced longitudinal axis, use is made of forging machines which are provided with three or more rams distributed in one plane, in particular with four rams offset relative to one another by 90 DEG in an X shape, acting radially on the workpiece guided longitudinally along the axis of the system and fitted with tools. In order to achieve a compact construction of such forging machines and, at the same time, to achieve ram guides with little play, the rams are, according to EP 0 228 658 B1, designed as pistons or cylinders of piston-cylinder units and guided directly, i.e. not in staggered formation. Starting from this prior art, it is the object of the invention to avoid both double-acting pistons and ram retraction mechanisms acting by way of shafts. This object is achieved by virtue of the fact that, taking rams (2) designed as or connected to cylinders as a basis, the rams (2) or cylinders connected to them are, according to the invention, each provided with or connected to a flange (19) and each surrounded by a ring (17) which engages behind the flange (19), each ring (17) and the cross-beam (15) assigned to it and intended for stroke-position adjustment being connected and piston-cylinder units (22, 20) for the retraction of the rams (2) being arranged between each ring (17) and the associated flange (19). <IMAGE>
