Process for the manufacture of 7alpha-methyl oestrogens of the general formula I see diagramm : EP0007515,P17,F1 in which R1 and R2 represent a lower alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, Z represents a hydrogen atom or an OR1 group, and X represents a functionally protected hydroxymethylene group, characterized in that, in a manner known per se, a) a compound of the general formula II see diagramm : EP0007515,P17,F2 in which R1 and Z have the meanings given in claim 1 and Y represents a -C-=N group or an optionally esterified -COOH or -SO2 R3 group, R3 representing a lower or middle alkyl group having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms or an optionally substituted aryl group, is reacted, in the presence of a deprotonating agent, with a compound of the general formula III see diagramm : EP0007515,P17,F3 in which X and R2 have the meanings given in claim 1 and R3 has the meaning given above, yielding a compound of the general formula IV see diagramm : EP0007515,P18,F4 in which R1 , R2 , X, Z and Y have the meanings given above ; b) the compound of the general formula IV is cyclised to form a compound of the general formula V see diagramm : EP0007515,P18,F5 in which R1 , R2 , X, Y and Z have the meanings given above ; c) the compound of the general formula V is hydrogenated in the presence of a noble metal catalyst to form a compound of the general formula VI see diagramm : EP0007515,P18,F6 in which R1 , R2 , X, Y and Z have the meanings given above ; d) the compound of the general formula VI is oxidised to form a compound of the general formula VII see diagramm : EP0007515,P18,F7 in which R1 , R2 , Z and X have the meanings given above ; e) the compounds of the general formula VII are methylated.
