Abstract
An impact attenuation device for catching and retarding vehicles in front of obstacles next to a road has transverse frames (1) which are arranged one behind the other at a distance, are each situated on an upright (5) and can be displaced with the latter in the longitudinal direction, so that side plates (4) which are mounted laterally on the transverse frames and overlap in imbricated fashion are pushed one inside the other in the manner of a telescope. The upright (5) is designed as an element (2) having an essentially rhomboid cross- section and deforming plastically upon impact, during which deformation the supported transverse frame (1) is raised against the clamping resistance of guide cables (6) clamping behind the side plates (4) (right in the figure). A clamping device (9), which is arranged on a longitudinal guide rail (10') between the transverse frame (1) and the retaining piece (14) of the upright (5), counters this lifting movement with frictional resistance. <IMAGE>
