Abstract

The polyglycerol-containing distillation residues which are pasty or almost solid and are produced in the synthetic preparation of glycerol are reacted in the presence of an acid catalyst with an acetal or ketal at elevated temperature under atmospheric or reduced pressure, and the reaction mixture is fractionally distilled to give the individual cyclic acetals or ketals which are then cleaved in the presence of an acid catalyst or acidic cation exchanger to give the corresponding pure polyglycerols.
