Abstract

In the process for continuously applying a treatment agent as a liquid having a viscosity similar to that of water, especially an aqueous solution of chromating agents, at room temperature in a uniformly thin layer to the cleaned surface of steel tubes which are lined up to form an endless strand, as a pretreatment for subsequent plastic coating, especially for coating with an epoxy resin primer layer, a thermoplastic topcoat and an adhesive layer, located inbetween, of a copolymer of the thermoplastic of the topcoat, the treatment agent being applied by pouring on and subsequent drying, it is proposed, in order to obtain a desired quality level of the tube coating at low cost and to maintain this level at a value which is as constant as possible, that the pouring-on is carried out with a fair excess, that the excess treatment agent is circulated, that the treatment agent is uniformly distributed over the entire circumference by means of brushes or a brush-like spreading device under an approximately constant contact pressure around the tube circumference and that drying by supplying heat starts within at most 20 seconds after the distribution. <IMAGE>
