Abstract

In a process to smooth the surface of a paper or carton web (2) the paper feeds to a wide-nip (5) that extends at least 30 mm in length. The nip has a lower drum (4) and an upper drum (3) with a surface temperature of 100C or more. The paper or carton is surrendered to a curl generator that cancels the curl generated in the nip. The curl generator has a steam dispenser or water jets discharging at a rate of 1 - 10 g/m paper. The moisture is dispensed towards that side of the web in contact with the top drum. Also claimed is a wide-nip calender.
