Abstract

A heat exchanger has a flue gas flow path 10 for gases from a boiler, a water flow path 2 for water flowing through the heat exchanger, and a heat transfer means 16 for transferring heat from the gas flow 10 to the liquid flow path 2, the heat transfer means 16 forming a thermal store and having a heat capacity selected as a function of the maximum power output of the boiler. The heat transfer means 16 can be a reservoir 6 of water condensed from the flue gases. The water flow path 2 may be mixed by a blend valve (140, fig 7) with cold water before entering a heating path within the boiler. The thermal store may be sized to reach maximum temperature within 1 hour of starting the boiler and have a heat capacity equivalent to 0.5 to 1 litre of water per kilo-watt hour (kWh) of boiler output. A secondary thermal store (20, fig 2), further heat exchangers 102,110, a condensate collection wall (40, fig 2), water level hole 33 or drain, and/or a serpentine flow path (fig 2) may be provided.
