Abstract

A first coater (24) or compact feeder (4) delivers first coating material (t 1) down onto the web (2). It forms a curtain (t c 1), producing a first layer (t 2 1). A second coater (25) or compact feeder (4) is spaced a given distance from the first, along the web. It similarly forms a curtain (t c 2) of material (t 2) meeting the first layer (t 1 1), to form a coating layer (t 2 1). A barrier (8) intervenes between and separates the curtains, preventing interference and interaction between them. An air knife (6) ahead of the first air curtain blasts a high velocity flow onto the web surface, against web travel. This removes the air boundary layer adherent to the web. It prevents or minimizes disturbances to both curtains. The tip (6s) of the air knife device is low down above the web and the outlet opening is above the tip. The distance between them is 50-150 mm. Spacing between tip and first curtain is 10-50 mm. Spacing between curtains is 30-100 mm. Spacing between barrier and second curtain is 20-80 mm.
