Abstract

Ultrafiltration is performed with two or more membrane cartridges (A,B,C) arranged in series. Feed of solution or suspension is supplied to each cartridge at a pressure which would normally exceed the maximum allowable transmembrane pressure were it not for the back pressure applied on the permeate side. The magnitude of the back pressure is adjusted so that the resultant transmembrane pressure does not exceed the maximum allowable. For an arrangement where three cartridges (A,B,C) are used, the first unit (C) has an inlet pressure of 50-120 psi and a back pressure of 25-95 psi. The second unit (B) has an inlet pressure of 40-80 psi and a back pressure of 15-55 psi. For a three cartridge arrangement, a 36.5% increase in efficiency can be obtd. together with a 53% reduction in energy costs. The ultrafiltration of electrophoretic paint and cheese whey is exemplified.
