Abstract

The richness control method is used in an engine (2) having an exhaust pipe (1) which incorporates a two or three-way catalytic converter (3) with an all-or-nothing lambda probe (4) on the downstream side yielding binary information which signifies rich or lean mixture. A second probe (5) of proportional type is placed preferably between the engine and the converter. The control method involves recalibration of the second probe at several operating points corresp. to different mixture strengths. The recalibration of zero richness, corresp. to absence of combustion gas from the exhaust pipe, is preferably delayed for a time after the engine has been stopped.
