Abstract

To reduce the NOx formed in the flame zone of a combustion, a part of the exhaust gases resulting from this combustion, cooled if necessary, is recirculated in countercurrent to the exhaust gases leaving said flame zone and added to the combustion air flowing into the flame zone. A device suitable for carrying out this method and having a combustion chamber (1) accommodating a gas burner (3) and bounded by a combustion chamber wall (10) comprises a partition (11) which, together with the combustion chamber wall (10) forms a guide (12) for a part of said exhaust gases which is fed in countercurrent (13) to the exhaust gases flowing through the heat exchanger (7) and opens into a chamber (14) which is situated underneath the burner (3) and from which said part of the exhaust gases is added to the primary and/or secondary combustion air. <IMAGE>
