Process for the production of cold swellable starch products.

The invention relates to a process for the production of cold-swelling starch products or starch products which form paste in cold water from products produced according to Patent No. 97684, which can be swelled at a higher temperature, but below the gelatinization temperature.
 EMI1.1
is treated with formaldehyde or related substances in the dry state at an elevated temperature, expediently at temperatures above the gelatinization temperature of the starch. According to the present invention, the starch products which can be obtained by this process and swell below the gelatinization temperature are subjected to drying, the products being made into a paste with water before drying to avoid the formation of dextrin.

The drying can be carried out in any manner by any known drying method, e.g. B. on belts, rollers, drums and. Like. Dryers or in a vacuum, taking into account that the drying is already subject to swelling starch, the layer thickness during drying and the drying process are irrelevant and drying temperatures below 1000 can also be used, i.e. temperatures that cause the starch to swell without prior treatment is not achievable even in a thin layer.

Embodiment: 100kg potato starch are in a heated stirred kettle with 1-2%, i. s. 1000-2000 g of 40% formaldehyde are intimately mixed and exposed to a temperature of 70-800 for 1-1% hours with constant stirring. The product obtained in this way swells in water at temperatures below the gelatinization temperature of the starch. The product is made into a paste with warm water, e.g.

   B. 100 kg swelling starch with 11/4 to 1% times the weight of warm water of about 55 C, stirred in a kneading machine to form a dough and after drying, the od in vacuum apparatus or on endless belts, on rollers and can also be carried out at temperatures below 1000, ground or ground to a fine powder. The powder swells in cold water and then forms a stiff paste.
