Der heutige Fortschritt bringt es mit sich, daß in unserem Leben die Information - egal in welcher Form - immer wichtiger wird. Doch die Bereitstellung einer großen Menge an Informationen in Papierform, auf Tonträger oder Videobändern bringt auch erhebliche Nachteile mit sich: Die Informationsträger zB. in Papierform brauchen sehr viel Platz und deren Gewicht kann die bequeme Handhabung um einiges erschweren. Außerdem sind die Materialkosten bei mehreren tausend Seiten Text mit anspruchsvollen Bildern auch sein-erheblich. Ein Nachteil von Informationen auf Tonträgern oder Videobändern, die ev. als Ergänzung zu Papierinformationen dienen sollen, ist die örtliche Trennung zwischen Buch, HiFi-Anlage, Videorecorder und Fernseher beim Konsum dieser Informationen. Durch die Entwicklung der Compact Disc - Speichertechnik (zB. als CD-ROM), ist es heute möglich, große Mengen Text, Bilder, Tonaufzeichnungen und Videos auf eine einzige leichte CD zu speichern. Doch sind die Nachteile beim Anschauen bzw. Anhören des Inhalts ev. durch einen tragbaren Computer auch beachtlich: Der Preis für ein solches Gerät ist vielen Personen zu hoch und die - relativ komplizierte - Bedienung eines solchen Computers schreckt viele technisch unversierte Personen ab. Außerdem hat ein tragbarer Computer durch sein - relativ -hohes Gewicht kein sehr angenehmes Handling, und der senkrechte aufgeklappte Bildschirm schränkt die Betrachtungspositionen sehr ein.Today's progress means that information - in whatever form - is becoming increasingly important in our lives.
