Process for the production of carbon electrodes.
Carbon electrodes are produced by intimately kneading finely powdered petroleum coke or retort graphite, i.e. as pure ash-free coal as possible, with tar or other low-ashen binding agents, stamping or pressing them into molds and burning them out at high temperatures.
For the quality of the electrodes, on the one hand, the purity and physical properties of the raw materials as well as the most intimate possible mixing and smelting of the coal with the tarry binder are decisive. With regard to these requirements, the present method for the production of carbon electrodes exceeds the previously known types of production.
According to the new method, natural gas is subjected to heat splitting in an externally heated pipe or the like in such a way that a mixture of soot and tar-like products is formed. By suitable choice of the temperature and length of the heated zone of the pipe as well as the flow velocity and reduction of the partial pressure of the natural gas, the pyrogenic decomposition of the natural gas can be regulated in such a way that on the one hand the most favorable possible yield of coal or soot and on the other hand the highest possible content achieved on tar.
For example, a 3 m long, 40 /, 40 wide chamotte heated to around 10,000
EMI1.1
deposited, which contains 6-7% very finely distributed tar and can be pressed immediately.
Apart from the fact that the coal obtained in this way is practically completely free of foreign admixtures, in particular ash, the product has the particularly favorable property that, as a result of the simultaneous formation of coal and tar, these two substances are so intimate; Molecular mixture, so to speak, is present, as it cannot be achieved by comminuting a differently obtained coal and even the most extensive mixing and kneading with tar.
As a result of this fact, a relatively lower tar content of the mass is already sufficient to obtain usable electrodes than with previous manufacturing methods. and the condition of the electrodes is more uniform and cheaper.
If the highest possible coal yield is sought, the amount of tar that is produced at the same time can, under certain circumstances, be so small that additional amounts of tar or the like have to be added. But because the coal is already very thoroughly and evenly saturated with tar. the even distribution and absorption of further tar quantities by the coal is promoted.
The intimate mixture achieved in this way is in a manner known per se'known, for. B. formed by stamping and pressing and. burned.
For special anodes it has already been suggested to press and anneal soot; Such "soot" forms a non-dense, staining mass which is suitable for accumulator anodes, but not for metal-sounding, glass-hard clay electrodes and the like.
