Description

Process for the complete conversion of coal tar oils, shale oils and similar oils into pitch.

The present invention relates to a process for the complete conversion of coal tar oils, shale oils and other such oils into pitch. This process consists in mixing these oils with substances which prevent the distillation of these oils and whose mean boiling point is accordingly higher than that of the oils to be treated. For this purpose, according to the present invention, heavy tar oils are used, and by mixing the latter with the above oils, a complete conversion of these oils into pitch can be brought about if the mixture of the above oils and the heavy tar oils is mixed at elevated temperature treated with a stream of air under pressure.

The effect of the new process is based on the fact that the addition of high-boiling tar oils increases the density and boiling point of the oils to be treated and the volatile components contained in them are retained by absorption, while at the same time increasing the static resistance to the air introduced into the mass. The air acts very energetically under these circumstances and gives off almost all oxygen. The temperature of the heated oils mixed with the tar is, as is known, noticeably increased in this way by exothermic reactions, so that at most from a given moment the conversion of the oils and even their distillation can continue without external heating.

For example, to convert coal tar into pitch, the former is first heated to a temperature of 120 to 1700 for dehydration; Then the tar is mixed with 20 to 70% naphthalene oils (mean boiling point approx. 3000) and heated to 120 to 2400 while passing through a strong stream of air. With a batch of 30! the required duration of treatment is 6 to 10 hours.

It is Z. B. from British patent specification No. 23680/1904 and German patent specification No. 171380 and No. 163446 known to treat heavy tar oils or coal or beech tar with air while heating for the purpose of obtaining pitch. The addition of tar oils with a higher boiling point enables the more volatile constituents that distilled over in earlier processes to be retained and oxidized, thus making the conversion complete.
