Cupola furnace with wind preheaters built into the furnace shaft wall.
This invention relates to cupolas which have wind preheaters built into the shaft.
The invention lies in the fact that the preheater closest to the melting zone is equipped with openings which open directly into the shaft of the cupola and allow part of the air passing through the preheater to pass into the latter. where this amount of air, due to its high temperature, causes the carbon dioxide gas that has accumulated in this part of the furnace to burn and thus causes further heat development, which heat is partly absorbed by the wall of the wind preheater.
A further feature of the invention is that the preheaters through which the blower wind flows are equipped with ribs so that they are cooled very well and quickly. This latter arrangement has two advantages: First of all, any risk of burning the preheater is avoided and, moreover, the air flowing through the preheater is preheated to a relatively very high temperature.
In the drawing, FIG. 1 illustrates a view of a cupola furnace equipped according to the invention and FIG. 2 shows a vertical section through the same along the line AB in FIG. 1. The cupola furnace has two (or more, depending on the version) in a manner known per se -

to prevent disturbing the coat.
Of the two preheaters, one 1 is arranged just below the loading opening and the other 2 is arranged at a corresponding distance below the former. The seal is secured by the heat-protecting cladding.
The wind line 6 and 7 is kept as short as possible. The air enters the upper front

Each pipe 9 can also be supplied with wind independently of the wind box through a special pipe socket and has a shut-off device 10 which allows the pipe 9 to be switched off from the wind box 8. All wind conductors are encased with heat protection compound in order to prevent heat loss as much as possible.
The cold air which is supplied by the fan is heated by contact with the heat exchange surfaces of the preheater and reaches a considerably increased temperature as soon as it reaches the distribution pipes 9; as a result, the temperature in the melting zone of the furnace is increased significantly, only at the expense of the upper parts of the cupola.

The lower preheater 2 has two rows of small openings 4 opening into the furnace shaft, through which a corresponding subset of the wind can enter the shaft of the cupola furnace. As far as possible, this amount of air causes a considerable amount of the carbon oxide gas flowing upwards through the charge and this additional combustion, which would not take place without the arrangement of the holes 4, ensures a high level of preheating of the superimposed charge of the upper preheater.
As soon as the melting process is interrupted for whatever reason and the fan supplying the wind is switched off, the lower preheater would no longer be sufficiently cooled by air ventilation and would heat up to a dangerous temperature level. In order to rule out this possibility, two shut-off devices 11 are arranged in the furnace shell 3, through the opening of which the interior of the preheater can be brought into connection with the outside air.
The mouths of the tuyeres can be accidentally moved, either by slag or by a piece of cast iron just falling through the melting zone; in this case the wind is turned off by closing the shut-off device 10 of the relevant wind guide nozzle; Since in this case the wind does not cool the slag or the upstream cast iron fin, it must melt quickly and fall into the air, whereupon the wind can be turned on again in the relevant nozzle.
Under the cupola equipped with the wind preheater, a tiltable forehearth 72 is arranged in a known manner, which fulfills the same purpose as a fixed forehearth, enables better utilization of the coke used as fuel and allows the molten metal to come into contact with the glowing coke and the action of the wind withdraws PATENT CLAIMS:
