Schraubenlieger.

EMI3.5
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Screw layers.
The subject of the invention is a screwdriver, the single screw of which is provided with hollow wings and with tubes and is rotated in a manner known per se by the reaction of a fluid circulation which is expelled into the atmosphere in a direction which is opposite to that in which it is the screw should turn. According to the invention, the propulaionamotor is built into the screw itself and the gondola used to accommodate the pilot is arranged on the axis of rotation of the screw in such a way that it can rotate independently of this and therefore take and maintain any direction in space at any speed of rotation can.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the hub of the screw itself serves as a support for the flying machine when it is resting on land or water.
In the drawing, the invention is shown for example. 1 shows a view of a screwdriver manufactured according to the invention, FIG. 2 shows a horizontal section, FIGS. 3 and 4 cross sections along lines 3-3 and 4--1 of FIG. 2, FIG. 5 shows a propulsion motor with stationary Cylinders which can be used for the flying machine, FIG. 6 shows a section along the line 6-6 in FIG. 7 through a flying machine with a single-wing screw and a motor with rotating cylinders; 7 is a plan view of this apparatus, partially in section.

Fig. 16 relates to the equilibrium conditions of a single-bladed propeller in the air. 17 and 18 show a view and horizontal section of another embodiment of the invention, FIGS. 19, 20 and 21 show details of the construction of the gondola.
The helicopter has a fan with a motor of any type that can suck in air from the atmosphere through a duct that is exactly forward with respect to the
Direction of travel directed or at least arranged in such a way. that the draft of the air during the journey does not impair the entry of the air into this line. The one in there. 8th
Air sucked into the fan housing is pressed through pipes. which are arranged in the wings of the screw and their inlet or outlet openings approximately tangential to those described by the various points of these wings during the rotation
Circles. Due to the reaction of the outflowing fluid, the blades turn in a circle.
The screw 1 is provided with any number of wings, e.g. B. four, three. two (Fig. 1), or just a single one (Fig. 6). It can also have a very large number of wings. so that it forms a real wheel.
For reasons of balance, the fan with the motor driving it is arranged in the middle when the number of blades is equal to or greater than two, i.e. H. when the screw itself has an axis of symmetry. In the case of a screw with one wing or with two unequal wings, the motor is arranged at the end opposite the single wing or the main wing, so that it acts as a counterweight, but in the center of rotation the only possible space for leaves the pilot and the gondola.
The arrangement of a shell 2 on the lower part of the screw in its axis of rotation, which represents a kind of waterproof hub, enables the flying machine to swim in equilibrium on the water or rest on the land, the shell due to its volume, its tightness and its rounded shape acts as a boat or base, but takes part in the rotation of the screw. For special maneuvers, e.g. B. when trying on the spot, during transport and the like. Or for the purpose of takeoff and landing in certain terrain, a removable support 3 (Fig. 1, 5) can be arranged on the shell 2, on whose axis it is then centered so that it allows rotation of the apparatus resting on the floor.
The fan motor, which z. B. can be a combustion machine, is provided with fuel and oil from containers located in the center of rotation, so that centrifugal force gives the latter the tendency to flow towards the motor, and this tendency will be greater, the faster the screw rotates, the more fuel and oil it consumes.
The engine 4 (Fig. 5, 6) can be a turbine or a piston engine with fixed or rotating cylinders. In the former case, the impeller 5 of the fan is simple
EMI1.1
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
can expediently be formed by the engine itself by placing the wings at the outer end of the cylinder.
In any case, the fan is provided with a housing 6 which can have a single pressure line 8 (FIG. 8) or two such (FIG. 9) or even several, depending on whether one or two or more blades are to be supplied. A flap 6b, which is used to regulate the pressure of the air, can be arranged in this pressure line (FIG. 6). The housing, made of light material, is united with the frame of the wings, which is also made of light material (e.g. wood veneer), by solid connections in order to withstand the considerable eccentrifugal forces that occur during travel and around the wings despite their lightness to give great strength.
The air forced into the ducts 8 by the fan exits into the atmosphere through pipes or the like 7 which, lying in a suitable direction, are arranged in the blades.
Inside the casing and the hollow blades that form ducts 8, the exhaust gases are also conducted, the heat of which is added to that emitted by the engine in order to heat the air drawn off by the fan, which cools the engine itself. In this way, in the form of expansion work, a partial recovery of thermal energy is obtained, which would be lost without this device, thereby increasing the total efficiency.
If you use a gas jet blower (burning or exploding) to compress the air
Gases), the overall arrangement remains the same, only the fan replaces the motor or is arranged next to it as an auxiliary motor. In both cases, the fan (or several) sucks. which is arranged in the sash takes air from the atmosphere and pushes it into the same tubes.
The number of tubes 7 or tube systems is proportional to the number of wings and the tubes are distributed as close as possible to the outermost edges of the wings. which is a condition for good efficiency.
The pressure lines 8, which are arranged between the double walls. which form the front part of the wing have such a cross-section that the outer shapes of the wings
EMI2.1
correspond (Fig. 10). The cross-sections shown in FIGS. 3 and 4 correspond to these
Conditions.
The suction opening 9 of the fan or the air inlet of the blower always open into the upper part of the apparatus so that the shell remains tight and any suction of water, sand, dust
EMI2.2
The rounded shape of the bowl is such that a turning movement that occurs for a few moments on the floor does not cause any bumps as a result of unevenness in the floor.
The shape of the wings (Fig. 10), the flexibility of their rear edge which could come into contact with the ground and the very small angle at which such contact could take place also eliminate any risk of bumps or snagging.
EMI2.3
FIGS. 17 and 18 show schematically a helicopter in which the fan and motor rotate in opposite directions to the wing. If the apparatus is in equilibrium in the air, it has a more or less great inclination in the longitudinal direction, as will be described later. As a result of the opposite direction of rotation of the blade and the group of motorized fans, the latter produces gyroscopic effects which try to bring the apparatus as close as possible to the horizontal position.
As is well known, an inclination of the axis of the screw to the vertical has the consequence that it tends to move within the same inclination. A lifting screw with a vertical axis has a propulsive effect. as soon as its axis is no longer exactly perpendicular. You only need to tilt the axis of the screw in the appropriate direction for steering.
To force the axis to incline, you can z. B. by suitable maneuvers on the wings
EMI2.4
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
To raise or lower the wing or part of it, you only need to change its angle of attack for a moment.
Each wing of a screw now forms a wing that can be controlled by the same means. The wing made of wood veneer with a thickness of 3 to 5 mm has an auxiliary wing 10, 10a at the front and rear (FIG. 11). Under the action of these auxiliary wings, when they have the inclination shown in Figure 11, the wing will tend to rise in front and lower in the rear and therefore, due to the elasticity of the wing, the direction, J instead of the initial direction AP. Take BI (Fig.
12). The hub of the screw behaves like the fuselage of an airplane moving in the direction M, N, while its wings, forced by some maneuver, pass from position J, B into position A2, B2 (Fig. 13 ) by swinging or twisting around their axis of rotation.
If it is a screw with a single wing, another, even simpler solution is possible.
Here, as before, the resistance of two opposing blades arranged on the same axis does not come into consideration, but only the moment of the center of gravity with reference to the pivot point, which, however, still has a certain gyroscopic effect, which tries to keep the axis of the hub parallel to stick to yourself. However, both forces are not large enough to be able to offer considerable resistance to the control.
The result of this particular balance is that the maximum inclination of 10 "is achieved here by turning the hub itself, which is achieved by twisting the elastic
EMI3.1
Control maneuvers can be used to secure the descent of the apparatus in gliding flight.
You can see that a screw. whose angle of attack is small, with suitable
Load decreases when rotating around its axis at an exceptionally slow speed. An example from nature for this slow descent is provided by the seed-bearing leaf of various trees, especially that of the sycamore (FIG. 14).
If the engine comes to a standstill, it will be sufficient to give the wings an angle of attack of approximately 0, and to rule out any error on the part of the pilot. all control elements are arranged in such a way that they automatically correspond to this angle of attack

The valve system is controlled from the nacelle by means of organs described below.
The question of the equilibrium of the apparatus in the air, which is clear in the case of a symmetrical screw with several blades. can be explained in the following way for the case of an unsymmetrical screw with a single wing (Fig. 16). Assuming the apparatus is in equilibrium in the air and rotating around an axis passing through point G, the following forces act on it:
1. A weight P1 in the center of gravity p1 of the part of the apparatus that lies to the left of G,
EMI3.4
Resultant R1 and the three forces P, P2 and F2 together to form a resultant R2.
So that there is equilibrium, the two resultants must be ss and equal
EMI3.5
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
In addition, the inclination of the apparatus in the longitudinal direction is determined in such a way (which should not be confused with the transverse inclination which has been discussed so far) that the resultants RI and, IP coincide in their extensions, i.e. H. that this tendency is the one common to both resultants. This equilibrium is shown in numerous examples, for example that of the sycamore leaf (Fig. 14), the boomerang and, in general, any movable object that is thrown into the air and rotates around an axis other than an axis of symmetry.
The devices will now be described which are used for transverse inclination of the wing or wings during several rotations of the screw or only during a part of a rotation.
The gondola 2a is arranged at the pivot point on a rotation axis so that it can rotate independently of the rotation of the screw itself. Such a gondola is shown in FIGS. 19 to 21. Here the gondola 2a, which is mounted deep in the body of the screw in order to depress its center of gravity, is provided at the top with a roller ring 11 (three or more rollers) and in the lower part with a pin 12 running on balls. There is a certain amount of play between these organs so that unintentional jamming under the effect of slight deformations is prevented.
A flange 13 forms an air seal between the nacelle and the screw body, so that the escape of air is prevented, which is also made more difficult by the fact that the air in this zone is kept moving in order to reduce its static pressure. 7 shows how a circular vortex running in the direction of the arrows, t is generated in this zone by the main flow marked with arrow F. In this way a stream of low static pressure is obtained.

lets kick. which are usually kept raised by springs (not shown) and end at the upper end in annular foot steps 14a, 1.5a on which the pilot can step to lower the rods.
One of these rods acts directly on a control element, e.g. B. a valve. a piston or the like that sits on the engine. The other rod transmits its movement by means of a lever to another control element which regulates the flow of air to the control apparatus by which the above-mentioned auxiliary wings are operated.
Other similar rods 16. which are provided with rollers 17 (FIG. 20) are guided on the outside of the gondola and their upper end extends below the edge of the gondola. These rods are actuated by pressing down a flange 2, which is hinged to the gondola, by means of a handle 19.

certain meridian hm passage. This effect can be exerted during several successive revolutions at the same point on the circular path of the wing.
To complete the control, finger contacts 20 are arranged which are in contact with fixed sliding contacts 21. in order to be able to open and close the ignition circuit of the engine by means of an under-computer provided in the nacelle.
It has been explained above how it is possible by operating the auxiliary wings. To achieve not only a transverse inclination of the helical plane for the purpose of deviating from the direction of travel towards the height or side, but also intermittent transverse inclinations of the wing in a certain meridian for the purpose of other movements, especially when descending and landing.
The mechanism which enables these maneuvers to be carried out has also been described.
So there are only the means to explain, which serve to the gondola: u. to get a certain position without having to manipulate the parts; lb would be impossible in particular, apart from the inconveniences that would result from undesired rotations of the gondola.
First of all, it should be noted that if the action of the various control organs were to be canceled by accident, the pilot, by shifting his own weight in the nacelle, has a means of influencing the center of gravity of the entire apparatus and thus a slow vertical descent (scheme a in Fig . 15) to be transformed into a slow sloping descent boderer in order to be able to choose a suitable landing point.
Depending on the phases or circumstances of the flight, there are three means of maintaining the position of the gondola: First means: As already mentioned, the gondola is in a circular air-

effect from the center to the circumference.
Second means: a second wing 25 is arranged in such a way that it forms a wind vane which presents enough surface to attack the draft as soon as a certain speed is reached, so that the first device is no longer required. When landing under wind, this wing helps to orientate the pilot automatically via the air currents, which he can then counteract by tilting the apparatus.
Third means: This is based on the rotation of the blade 28 about its longitudinal axis by means of the crank 26. Its area is influenced by the air flow generated by the screw, which is directed upwards or downwards, depending on whether the screw, driven by the motor, increases or sinks under the influence of gravity. When the apparatus flies horizontally. the air flow created by the screw interacts with the air flow created by the journey.
The consequence is that the direction of the wing, which contributes to the equilibrium of the apparatus, changes from case to case.

effected by means of the operating air, whereby the same is heated and expanding increases the useful effect. If this arrangement does not cool the motor sufficiently, a special radiator can also be switched on in the pressure line for this purpose.
The heat from the exhaust gases is also used to compress and compress the air
The purpose of this is to distribute the engine's exhaust gases through a perforated ramp in a large number of fine jets in order to prevent any flame formation.
The invention is of course not restricted to the embodiments shown and described. Furthermore, the invention, although it has only been described in its application to a helicopter. which is intended to carry one or more pilots, also apply to all bodies or machines that are supposed to move in any fluid, e.g. B. Air and water vehicles of all kinds, air and water torpedoes.
Projectiles, parachutes and the like.
