<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The invention relates to a device for guiding a metal strip on a gas cushion with blow boxes arranged one behind the other in the strip longitudinal direction and having nozzle fields which extend transversely to the strip longitudinal direction and have perforated nozzles distributed over the field surface.
In order to be able to convey a metal strip floating on a gas cushion in the longitudinal direction of the strip, it is known (DE 30 26 132 A) to provide blow boxes one behind the other in the longitudinal direction of the strip, the nozzle fields of which extend transversely to the longitudinal direction of the strip and have perforated nozzles distributed over the field surface. The gas flowing through these perforated nozzles against the metal strip forms a supporting air cushion which is supported by a gas flow from slit nozzles which run transversely to the longitudinal direction of the strip and which delimit the field area forming the perforated nozzles. Since the gas cushion is not only used for contactless guidance of the metal strip, but also for heat transfer, heat treatment of the metal strip must also take into account the heat influences, which, among other things, cause the metal strip to bulge around a central longitudinal axis.
This means that the distance of the metal strip from the nozzle field is greater in the central area than in the area of the longitudinal edges of the metal strip. Because of this band curvature, the conditions for the supporting air cushion must be selected so that a sufficient distance from the blow boxes can be ensured in the central region of the metal band in order to be able to exclude contact in the longitudinal edge region. However, this necessary increase in the distance in the center area is associated with a reduction in the load-bearing capacity, which either requires the use of thinner metal strips or an increase in the gas volume flow through the nozzle fields.
In order to avoid lateral running of a metal band conveyed on a gas cushion, it is known (JP 07233422 A) to connect the nozzle field sections inclined upwards against the metal band to the flat nozzle field opposite the metal band, so that adjoining, inclined nozzle field sections a force component directed against the longitudinal center of the metal strip can be exerted on the metal strip. These force components directed against the longitudinal center of the metal strip cancel each other out when the strip runs symmetrically with respect to the gas cushion, but lead to a strip return when the strip runs laterally.
Since the nozzle field opposite the metal strip runs flat, the already described disadvantages arise in the case of a strip curvature due to heat treatment, which are exacerbated by the fact that the adjoining nozzle field sections are inclined upwards against the metal strip.
Finally, it is known (EP 0 726 220 A2), for example to hold paper webs wide, to apply compressed air to them via slot nozzles, which run across the width of the paper web and have a different orientation in a plane running transversely to the paper web that, for example, a compressed air component occurs not only perpendicular to the paper web but also transversely to the longitudinal edge in the longitudinal edge region of the paper web. To set the slot nozzle course, the slot nozzles are formed between an outer wall fixed to the frame and a deformable insert, which can be deformed according to the respective requirements via an adjusting device transversely to the paper web, in order to be able to adjust the blowing direction along the slot nozzles.
However, this adjustment of the slot nozzles, which can be achieved by the deformation of the insert transversely to the paper web, cannot provide any teaching for adapting a load-bearing gas cushion to the heat-induced curvature of a metal strip.
The invention is therefore based on the object of designing a device for guiding a metal strip on an air cushion of the type described at the outset in such a way that a metal strip that bulges under the action of heat can be guided in a contactless manner without having to accept a loss in load capacity due to the curvature of the metal strip to have to.
The invention achieves the stated object in that the nozzle fields have a convex basic shape due to field sections falling at least in one end section to both sides transversely to the longitudinal direction of the strip.
An approximately uniform distance between the metal strip and the nozzle fields can be ensured in a simple manner by a convex basic shape of the nozzle fields adapted to the curvature of the metal band, so that the load-bearing capacity of the air cushions generated by the nozzle fields can be fully utilized without running any risk. that the longitudinal edges of the tape touch the blow boxes. The convex, aligned with the curvature of the heated metal strip
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The basic shape of the nozzle fields also ensures that the metal strips are subjected to a largely vertical flow, also in the longitudinal edge area, so that overall advantageous bearing conditions can be guaranteed.
In the simplest case, the continuous curvature of the metal strip transversely to the longitudinal direction of the strip can be achieved by field sections in an end section of the nozzle fields falling transversely to the longitudinal direction of the strip. In order to ensure a further adaptation of the field area of the nozzle fields to the curvature of the heated metal strip, the field sections of the nozzle fields can increasingly decrease on both sides. This condition can be achieved by polygonal longitudinal sections of the nozzle fields. Of course, a constant curvature of the nozzle fields is also possible, but this is associated with a correspondingly greater production outlay.
In the heat treatment of metal strips, blow boxes with corresponding nozzle fields are provided both below and above the metal strip to be guided without contact in order to enable uniform heat treatment from both sides of the metal strip.
With such a nozzle array arrangement below and above the metal strip to be guided, it is recommended to design the upper nozzle arrays with a concave basic shape adapted to the convex basic shape of the lower nozzle arrays. This concave basic shape of the upper nozzle fields naturally does not affect the load-bearing capacity, but has a significant influence on the uniform heat transfer, which need not be explained in more detail.
The subject matter of the invention is shown in the drawing, for example, and a section of a device according to the invention for guiding a metal strip on a gas cushion is shown in a simplified diagram.
According to the exemplary embodiment shown, the device for guiding a metal strip 1 consists of a frame 2 which carries blow boxes 4 which are arranged one behind the other in the strip longitudinal direction 3 and form the nozzle fields 5. These nozzle fields 5 extend transversely to the strip longitudinal direction 3 and have perforated nozzles 6 distributed over the field surface, through which gas, for example air, is blown against the metal strip 1 to form a gas cushion. Slit nozzles 8 are provided along the edges 7 of the nozzle fields 5 which run transversely to the longitudinal direction 3 of the band and which limit the field of the perforated nozzles 6 and support the gas cushion built up by the perforated nozzles 6 with their gas jets.
The gas flow deflected on the metal strip 1 flows on the one hand between the two rows of slotted nozzles of each nozzle field 5 against the longitudinal edges 9 of the metal strip 1 and on the other hand reaches the return flow channels 10 formed between the blow boxes 4, which flow from the longitudinal center of the metal strip 1 against the longitudinal edges 9 expand due to the roof-shaped sloping frame surfaces 11 with regard to the flow cross-section in order to ensure the lowest possible flow speed and thus a comparatively low pressure drop.
In contrast to conventional nozzle arrays, the nozzle arrays 5 according to the invention have a convex basic shape which is adapted to the curvature of the heated metal strip 1 in order to ensure an approximately constant distance between the metal strip 1 and the nozzle surfaces 5.
As can be seen from the exemplary embodiment shown, the convex basic shape of the blow boxes 4 is achieved by longitudinal sections 13 of the field surface, which start from a central section 12 and are increasingly sloping, which are strung together in a polygonal manner in order to adequately adapt to the constant curvature of the curved metal strip 1 with simple constructive means. Because of this adaptation, advantageous load conditions are established without endangering the contactless guidance of the metal strip 1 on the gas cushion of the nozzle fields 5.
Since a uniform heat treatment of a metal strip 1 from both sides requires nozzle fields both on the lower and on the upper side of the metal strip, the blow boxes 14 arranged above the metal strip 1 and indicated by dash-dotted lines can also be provided with nozzle fields adapted to the curvature of the metal strip 1 5 are provided, which then have a correspondingly concave basic shape, so that in turn the distance to the metal strip 1 can be kept approximately the same over the bandwidth.
The invention is of course not limited to the exemplary embodiment shown, because it is, for example, not about the type and arrangement of the nozzles, but only about the convex basic shape of the lower blow-molding unit, which is adapted to the curvature of the heated metal strip 1.

ten 4 and, if necessary, the concave basic shape of the nozzle fields 5 of the upper blow boxes 14, in order to ensure, on the one hand, advantageous supporting conditions and, on the other hand, a uniform heat treatment of the curved metal strip 1.
