<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
verglichen.

The invention relates to methods for monitoring the reducing agent dosage in an SCR catalytic converter according to the preambles of claims 1,6 and 12.
A significant reduction in the NOx emission of a diesel internal combustion engine or a diesel combustion system can be achieved by using the so-called selective catalytic reduction method. In the SCR process, a reducing agent is injected into the exhaust gas at a point in front of an SCR catalytic converter, so that the chemical reactions in particular on the catalytic converter
4NO + 4NH3 + O2 4N2 + 6H2O
2N02 + 4NH3 + O2- 3N2 + 6H2O can run off. A suitable reducing agent is, for example, ammonia. For reasons of manageability, ammonia is metered in an aqueous solution or an aqueous solution of urea is metered in, which provides ammonia for the SCR process after hydrolysis. Dosing is carried out by timing the opening of a dosing valve.
The reducing agent solution is provided by a pump and a pressure regulator with a defined pressure at the valve. The reducing agent metering must be monitored continuously, since an overdosing causes ammonia emissions, but an underdosing results in high NOx emissions.
Exhaust gas sensors can be used to regulate the NOx reduction system. However, these sensors can only detect malfunctions in the metering by measuring NOx and NH3 concentration after the SCR catalytic converter only with a time delay, since the catalytic converter is dependent on the operating state of the internal combustion engine Storage capacity delays the effect of the disturbance on the NOx or NH3 concentration after the catalytic converter.
DE 43 34 071 C1 describes a method for reducing the nitrogen oxide concentration in the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine with the aid of a detector arranged behind the SCR catalytic converter in the exhaust tract. The detector has a sensor element that is responsive to both nitrogen monoxide and ammonia. The resistance or the electrical conductivity of the sensor element, which is dependent on the nitrogen monoxide and ammonia concentration, is measured, and an amount of the reducing agent is added to the exhaust gas in which the electrical resistance of the sensor element is the greatest or the electrical conductivity is the smallest.
DE 42 17 552 C1 discloses an exhaust gas treatment device for internal combustion engines with a catalyst for the selective catalytic reaction of nitrogen oxides from exhaust gases, in particular from exhaust gases from automotive diesel engines with overstoichiometric addition of NH3 or NH3-releasing substances. It has a first sensor which detects the NH3 concentration contained in the exhaust gas and which interrupts the addition of the NH3 amount when a predetermined upper threshold value is reached. A second sensor detects the NH3 adsorbed in the catalytic converter. When a predetermined lower threshold value is reached, the NH3 addition is released again.
EP 0 515 857 A1 discloses a process for the selective catalytic reduction of exhaust gases from motor vehicle diesel engines with the timed addition of NH3 or NH3-releasing substances, the timed overstoichiometric NH3 addition being controlled in such a way that the addition only occurs after it has started is then interrupted again when a high NH3 concentration, which is defined as a threshold value, has been reached in the gas phase at a specific point in the catalyst bed.
The NH3 addition only starts again when the NH3 stored in the catalytic converter has been largely used up by the reaction, this point in time being calculated approximately from the engine map and operating time and below, by calculating the NOx produced by the engine over the period since the start or end of dosing Taking into account the average degree of separation.
The object of the invention is to specify methods with which the reducing agent metering can be monitored continuously.
This object is achieved by the features of the independent claims 1,6 and 12. Advantageous further developments are characterized in the subclaims.
The addition of the reducing agent into the hot exhaust gas upstream of the SCR catalytic converter results in a change in temperature due to the heat of vaporization that occurs. The
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The temperature profile during the dosing process is monitored and evaluated, and a statement about the functionality of the dosing device is derived from this.
With the method according to the invention, it is easily possible to monitor the metering device, in particular the metering valve, for operability.
Exemplary embodiments of the invention are explained with reference to the following drawings, in which:
1 shows a block diagram of an exhaust system equipped with an SCR catalytic converter
Diesel engine,
FIG. 2 shows a typical course of the output signal of a temperature sensor when reducing agent is metered,
Figure 3 is a block diagram of one with an SCR catalyst and an electrically heated
Equipped exhaust system of a diesel engine and
Figure 4 shows a typical signal curve of the ohmic resistance of the mixer heater
Reducing agent dosing.
The exhaust system of a diesel engine 10 shown schematically in FIG. 1 has an intake tract 11 and an exhaust tract 12 with an SCR catalytic converter 13 of known construction arranged therein. Upstream of the SCR catalytic converter 13 is a metering device, consisting of a reducing agent tank 14, a pump 15 and a metering valve 16. The pump 15 conveys the reducing agent located in the reducing agent tank 14, for example ammonia or ammonia-releasing substances, which flows into the exhaust gas is injected upstream of the SCR catalytic converter 13 by means of the metering valve 16. The metering valve 16 is controlled by a control unit 17 via lines, which are not specified in any more detail. This control unit 17 ensures that the exhaust gas can be supplied with a specific, currently required amount of the reducing agent.
In the illustration, the control unit 17 is shown as a separate unit, but it is possible to integrate the function of this control unit into the control unit of the internal combustion engine.
The reducing agent is only dosed if the exhaust gas temperature is high enough to evaporate the reducing agent solution and hydrolyze urea. The temperature of the exhaust gas is measured at a point in front of the SCR catalytic converter by means of a temperature sensor 18. During the dosing process, the reducing agent or the reducing agent solution is injected into the hot exhaust gas. Due to the heat of evaporation of the solvent, each metering pulse draws heat from the environment. If the reducing agent jet hits the exhaust gas temperature sensor 18, this is cooled. This temperature jump can be detected by the control unit 17, since the sensor temperature changes faster on the sensor surface due to evaporation of the reducing agent or the reducing agent solution than through changes in the operating state of the internal combustion engine .
The upper part of FIG. 2 shows a typical course of the output signal of the temperature sensor 18 when the reducing agent is dosed. The temperature T detected by the temperature sensor 18 is plotted on the abscissa, and the time t is plotted on the ordinate. The lower part of FIG. 2 shows the time course of the valve current I with which the metering valve 16 is activated.
The control unit actuates the metering valve 16 by switching on at time t1 and switching off valve current I at time t2. In order to detect the temperature difference AT occurring due to the metering agent addition, the control unit uses the temperature T1, if possible shortly before the reducing agent jet after the metering valve 16 has been actuated
Temperature sensor 18 strikes, detected. In order to determine the optimal time for measuring the sensor signal T1, a delay time At1 is defined, in which valve reaction time,
Running time of the reducing agent jet, response time of the temperature sensor, etc. can be taken into account.
The second measurement of the temperature takes place after a delay time At2 after switching off the valve current! for the metering valve 16. By delayed measurement of the temperature
T2 after the closing of the metering valve 16 at the time t2, in addition to the valve closing speed, the running time of the reducing agent jet, the response time of the
Temperature sensor, etc. are taken into account.
The difference AT = T1-T2 is formed from the measured temperature values T1, T2 and then this temperature difference with a system-specific minimum value
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
compared. If the temperature difference AT exceeds the predetermined minimum value, the control unit 17 detects that a metering pulse has occurred. If the determined temperature difference AT remains below the minimum value, it is concluded that there is a faulty metering device and this result is entered in a fault memory 19 of the control device 17 and is displayed optically and acoustically to the driver of the vehicle equipped with the internal combustion engine 10.
If the temperature sensor 18 is sufficiently sensitive and the control unit, in particular the control computer contained therein, has sufficient power, the course of the temperature jump can also be evaluated as a measure of the length of the metering pulse, and thus the amount of reducing agent injected can be inferred at constant pressure. For example, values for the length of the metering pulse or the amount injected can be stored in a characteristic diagram of a memory 20 of the control unit 17 as a function of the temperature difference AT.
By using the output signal of the temperature sensor, which is arranged anyway for temperature measurement in the exhaust tract of the internal combustion engine and is used to trigger the metering of the reducing agent, there is a cost-effective way of monitoring the metering device, in particular the metering valve, for its operability.
If the NOx reduction system is designed with a heated device for mixing the exhaust gas with the reducing agent in order to ensure the best possible mixing and an early start of the metering, the temperature measurement on the part which is used to regulate the heating power can also be carried out Measurement of the ohmic heating resistance can be used as a measure of the temperature for monitoring the dosage.
FIG. 3 schematically shows the structure of such an exhaust system, which, in contrast to the system according to FIG. 1, additionally has an electrically heated gas mixer 21 upstream of the SCR catalytic converter 13. The remaining components in FIG. 3 are identical to the components in FIG. 1 and are therefore provided with the same reference symbols. The gas mixer 21 has a temperature sensor, which is used to regulate the heating power of the electrical heating device and is not explicitly shown. The output signal of this temperature sensor can be used in a manner analogous to that described with reference to FIG. 1 to check the metering valve 16.
As an alternative to this, the change in the electrical resistance of the heating device during the metering process can also be used as a measure of the temperature change for monitoring the metering.
The upper part of FIG. 4 shows the typical course of the electrical resistance of the heating device of the gas mixer when metering the reducing agent and the lower part of FIG. 4 shows the time course of the control current for the metering valve.
In contrast to the exemplary embodiment according to FIGS. 1 and 2, in this case at the specified times t1 + At1 and t2 + At2 not temperature values but values for the ohmic resistance of the heating device are recorded. The procedure for evaluating the measured resistance values corresponds to the procedure for evaluating the temperature values as described above. Depending on the resistance difference AR, values for the length of the metering pulse or the amount injected can then be stored in the memory 20.
If the heating device of the gas mixer 21 is equipped with a rapid temperature control, which immediately cools down when the temperature sensor cools down due to the metering agent addition
Heating power increases, so the heating current increases and is therefore almost constant
Heating resistance results, the heating power or the heating current can be used as a measure of the evaporation heat as a result of the injection pulse analogous to the temperature measurement.
