The invention relates to the preparation of 2-thiacephem derivatives of the general formula I in which R1 is an optionally substituted aliphatic or cycloaliphatic group, R2 is hydrogen or a carboxyl protective group, and Y is a halogen atom. The process consists of four intermediate stages, and the starting materials used are compounds of the following general formula III in which R1 and R2 have the above meaning, and Z has the following meaning: I) a group of the formula SR7 where R7 is alkyl, phenyl, tolyl or a heterocyclic group, II) a group of the formula SCOR8 where R8 is an optionally substituted lower alkyl group, III) a group of the formula (-NCOR9/COR10) where R9 and R10 are, independently of one another, lower alkyl or aryl or form, together with the dicarboxyamino group, a heterocyclic ring, or a group of the formula I where R7 is an optionally substituted lower alkyl or aryl group. <IMAGE>
