<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Note 0 : völlig frei von Korrosion
Note 3 : Oberfläche gleichmässig mit Rost bedeckt
Note 3 : Oberfläche mit starker Rostbildung bedeckt.

The subject of master patent no. 358154 is a flame-retardant polypropylene fiber with an ethylene content of 0 to a maximum of 1Q% by weight, which is characterized in that it contains 0.5 to 10% by weight of 1,3,5-tris (2nd , 3-dibromopropyl) -2,4,6-trioxo-hexahydrotriazine and 0.15 to 3.5 wt.

This polypropylene fiber is produced from the mixture containing the flame-retardant triazine compound, the antimony trioxide and the organic tin compound by melt spinning processes, with no disruptive corrosion of the spinning tools occurring. In the small fire test according to PIN 53436, the fiber fully meets the requirements placed on a flame-retardant fiber.
It has now been found, in a modification of the invention according to the parent patent, that flame-retardant fibers are obtained even then and that there are no corrosion problems on the spinning device if, instead of the Zinnyerqindul1 \ th used in the parent patent, those of the general formula
EMI1.2
are used in which R and R 2 'which may be the same or different. each represent an alkyl or cycloalkyl radical and n denotes the number 1 or 2.
R, and R; ; are preferred butyl or ootyl radicals.
The preferred amount of flame retardant triazine compound is 1 to 3% by weight, the amount of antimony trioxide then remaining below 1% by weight. The preferred amount of tin compound of formula (I) is then 0.1 to 0.3 moles per mole of triazine compound.
The flame-retardant polypropylene fiber according to the invention is produced as in the parent patent by melt spinning the mixture which contains flame retardant, antimony trioxide and tin compound of the formula (I).
Hiebei can the finished polypropylene mixture z. B. is in granular form, melted and spun. But it is also possible to make the additives to the flame-retardant system only in the extruder by z. B. the triazine compound, the Si, 03 and the tin compound of the formula fl) is added to the melted polypropylene via a side extruder. These additives can be handled as pure substances or as a concentrate (master batch). As a binder for the latter serve either polypropylene or other plastics compatible with polypropylene, such as. B. other polyolefins.
The polypropylene melt provided with the flame retardant in this way can be used both in the short spinning process, which is characterized by low take-off speeds (5 to 50 m / min), and in the conventional melt spinning process, which has typical take-off speeds of 100 to 1000 m / min in the so-called Sohnell spinning process (take-off speed> 1000 m / min), as well as in the so-called "jet spinning" up to extreme speeds of 4000 m / min, or process to an endless fiber fleece.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The fibers produced in this way can be stretched, crimped, further processed into staple fibers and equipped with the usual finishing agents in the same way as non-flame-retardant polypropylene fibers.
Pigments, antioxidants, light stabilizers and lubricants, but also radical-forming peroxides in the form of the pure substances or as concentrates can be added to the flame-retardant polypropylene melt before spinning without any loss of effectiveness. The latter cause molecular degradation (degradation) while lowering the molecular weight and can have a favorable influence on the fiber properties through the resulting equalization of the molecular weight. Surprisingly, this treatment does not impair the flame-retardant effect of the additives according to the invention.
The flame retardancy of the fiber according to the invention is checked in a small fire test according to DIN 53439.
The fire test is carried out according to the DIN standard with textile fabrics, the following assessment criteria being used; a) The burned-out length is less than 150 mm, the sample extinguishes itself, class K, b) The tip of the flame of the burning test specimen reaches the measuring mark of 150 mm in
2Q or more seconds. Class K, c) The flame tip of the burning test specimen reaches the measuring mark of 150 mm in less than 20 s. Class K ,. The sample is flammable.
The effects of the thermal decomposition of the flame retardant that arise
Discoloration of the polypropylene melt, as well as the corrosion associated with the decomposition, can easily be examined by means of multiple extrusion at high temperatures using a laboratory extruder.
Data of the extruder: screw: 19, 1 mm diameter, screw length 20 D, polyolefin screw, 3 steps,
Compression ratio 1: 4 round nozzle; 5 mm diameter, water bath, strand pelletizer,
For all experiments, the screw speed was kept constant at 100 rev / min
Melt temperature information relates to the temperature measurement at the screw tip.
The effect of decomposition due to Her corrosion is determined using the following method:
Pie obtained from the extrusion, cooling and granulation of the strand
15 g weight is pressed at 230 C in a press in contact with a degreased and highly polished steel plate for 7 minutes to a plate of 70 x 70 x 2 mm.
After cooling, the polypropylene plate is carefully detached from the steel, the steel plate is then stored at 23 ° C. and 100% relative atmospheric humidity for 24 h and then assessed as follows:
Grade 0: completely free of corrosion
Note 1: slight rust formation (recognizable by wiping with a clean cotton ball and discolouration of the cotton wool)
Grade 3: surface evenly covered with rust
Grade 3: Surface covered with strong rust.
The multiple extrusion tests were carried out both at 2500C and at 28ssC from granulated product. The additives were kneaded in under mild conditions at a melt temperature of 210 ° C. It should be mentioned that a polypropylene with a high molecular weight was deliberately chosen for the investigation of the thermal decomposition of the flame retardant in order to be able to carry out the multiple extrusion to be carried out at the high test temperatures (250 to 280 "G) with intervening granulation These experiments also show that the molecular weight of polypropylene has no influence on the HBr release from the flame retardant.
The following example is intended to explain the production and the properties of the fiber according to the invention in more detail without wishing to restrict the invention thereby.
Example: A polypropylene mixture based on a polypropylene with a melt index of 12 with the following composition: calcium stearate 0.2% by weight, 2,6-di-tert.butyl-p-cresol 0.1% by weight,

The primary threads produced in this way were drawn on a stretch twisting machine at a temperature of 1300G and a draw ratio of 1: 3. The final titer of the threads obtained was 1.15 tex., The titre of the individual capillaries was 1.7 tex.
The threads thus obtained have a tear strength of 34 cN / tex. and an elongation at break of 65%.
The fibers were subjected to the small flame test according to DIN 53438. For this purpose, they were folded into a yarn of 230 tex / 136 capillaries and then processed on a circular knitting machine into a knitted fabric with a basis weight of 530 g / m '. The flea structure was tested in the above test by edge flame treatment.
The fibers had a burn time of 13 s and a burned-out length of 68 mm as the average of 5 determinations and therefore corresponded to class Kl.
The mixtures which served as the starting material for the production of the fibers according to this example were subjected to the corrosion test by multiple extrusion. The degree of corrosion was rated 0. In comparison, a blank sample of the same mixture, but without the addition of the tin compound of the formula (I), showed the degree of corrosion 3.
