<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The invention relates to a circuit arrangement for regenerating distorted amplitude-modulated pulses with the aid of correction signals which are obtained from the distorted signal and superimposed on it.
DE-OS 1537318 has made known the equalization of signals with the aid of RC sub-networks, with which, however, only those pulse signals that have passed through a transmission path without attenuation poles can be regenerated. In such cases, capacitive coupling must not be provided because the mean direct current value and low frequencies, the amplitudes of which are lost in the noise, cannot be recovered.
In contrast, the invention has the task of regenerating those signals that have passed through a transmission path with real attenuation poles, even when parts of the necessary transmission band are below the noise level, and this is achieved in that either from the input of the circuit arrangement tapped distorted signal or the signal tapped from the output and superimposed with the correction signal in at least one amplitude modulator on a single frequency or in a single amplitude modulator on

A particularly favorable pulse regeneration is obtained if, according to a further feature of the invention, the pulse generator with the signals to be

Two variants of the invention are shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 of the drawings in the circuit diagram.
In both cases, a signal U is transmitted from a transmitting station --1-- via a transmission link-2-- with filter properties to a receiving station --3--, in which a circuit arrangement according to the invention for regenerating the distorted received signal V is located.
As a result of this regeneration, the undistorted signal U is obtained at least largely error-free at the output --4-- of this circuit arrangement.
According to the invention, the distorted signal V is regenerated in such a way that a correction signal K is added to it in a superimposition network. This correction signal K is obtained from the distorted signal V itself u. with the help of a modulator - -6-, which is followed by a filter --7--, the modulation being carried out with a signal F generated by an oscillator.
The difference between the two versions according to FIGS. 1 and 2 is now that in the former the signal U taken from the output --4-- is subjected to the modulation, while in the embodiment according to FIG. 2 the distorted signal V is used.
The mode of operation of the circuit arrangement according to the invention is based on an adaptation of the frequency response of the filter --7-- to the frequency response of the transmission link --2--. Hiebei is based on the following consideration: If it is known on the receiver side which pulse widths and pulse intervals the distorted received pulses had in the original state and that all pulses only vary in their pulse heights, i. that is, the spectral composition of all pulses is basically the same and only the amplitudes are different, then the regeneration of the pulses is reduced to a compensation of the attenuation suffered on the transmission path, taking into account the respective pulse heights.
The frequency required for compensation

The spectrum is generated on the receiver side by the oscillator --8-- (pulse generator) in cooperation with the filter -7-- according to the following calculation:
The Fourier representation applies to the undistorted signal U.

On the transmission link --2-- the signal U is subjected to a distortion which is characterized by the frequency spectrum B (tt), so that the distorted signal V in Fourier representation has the form

The correction signal superimposed on the distorted signal V at the receiving station --3--

is to be set in such a way that the condition (1) V (t) + K (t) = U (t) is fulfilled, since the undistorted signal U is to come about again at the output 4 of the superimposition network. In Fourier representation, condition (1) has the form
EMI2.4
The contraction of these three expressions under one integral yields the condition (2) C (w) = A (w) [1 - B (w)] for the integrand.
In the following, the sizes relating to the embodiment according to FIG. 1 are provided with index 1 and the sizes relating to the embodiment according to FIG. 2 are provided with index 2.
In the embodiment according to FIG. 1, the output signal U is modulated in the modulator --6-- with pulses D (t) to form the correction signal K and then subjected to filtering in the filter --7--.
The Fourier representation applies to the pulses for the modulator --6--

The frequency spectrum C (w) of the correction signal K2 results as the product of the frequency spectra of the modulation product G2 (#) and the frequency spectrum F1 (#) of the downstream filter 7-:

2, the modulation product H2 (t) = V (t). D (t). Accordingly, the expression for the frequency spectrum G, (w) of the modulation product H2 (t) is:
EMI3.3
The multiplication by e-i w t and the integration after the time t yields the value 2 # G2 (#) for the expression in the upper line, in analogy to G. The expression on the right will be here

EMI3.6
The factor contained in the two expressions F, (w), (#) for the frequency response of the filter --7--
EMI3.7
is probably dependent on the spectral composition of the impulses, but not on the respective level of the distorted impulses.
It is therefore within a given pulse frame
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Factor an exactly definable constant.
In the case of the embodiment according to FIG. 1, that is to say with the signal taken off on the output side, it is expedient if the pulses D (t) of the amplitude modulator --6-- are synchronized with the pulses U (t) to be regenerated and the same pulse widths, however, constant pulse height h. Then the frequency response of the filter --7-- is reduced to the value
EMI4.1
The arrangements shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 of a modulator --6-- with a downstream filter -7-- can also be replaced by an arrangement of several modulators which modulate with different frequencies and which are followed by appropriately sized filters.
In many cases, this allows more extensive compensation of the frequency response B (w) of the transmission path --2-- than with a single modulator that modulates with only a single frequency.
However, an analog effect can also be achieved by means of a single modulator with a downstream filter which modulates its input signal with a frequency mixture, for example with pulses which, according to their Fourier analysis, are equivalent to a frequency mixture.
