The invention relates to a process for the preparation of new p- (p-alkylbenzoyloxy) benzoic acid phenyl esters of the general formula
EMI1.1
wherein n represents an integer from 1 to 5 and R represents an n-alkyl group.
According to the invention, this process is characterized in that a benzoyl chloride of the general formula
EMI1.2
wherein n has the meaning given above with an ester of the general formula
EMI1.3
where R has the meaning given above.
The novel compounds of the general formula (I) which can be prepared according to the invention have the advantage that they cooldown in liquid crystal display cells filled with nematic liquid crystals having a positive dielectric anisotropy, as an additive present only in small amounts of about 0.2 to 2.0% by weight of the liquid crystal after switching off the voltage applied to the liquid crystal display cell, and also have the ability to change the pitch of the helix formed by the molecules arranged in parallel to the carriers of the liquid crystal cell more or less depending on the concentration used in the liquid crystal, so that the possibility exists that the 0,
25 times this pitch in the manner required for such liquid crystal display cells to be made exactly the same as the distance between the carriers carrying the electrodes of the liquid crystal display cells and thus to significantly simplify the production of the liquid crystal display cells. For the sake of completeness, it should be mentioned that in such liquid crystal display cells having positive dielectric anisotropy, the supports are generally pretreated at an oblique angle by vapor deposition of an orientation layer material, usually SiO, and are oriented orthogonally to one another in the liquid crystal display cell with its projections of the vapor deposition directions onto the supports ,
on the outside of the carrier of the liquid crystal display cell, polarizers with a polarization direction perpendicular to the projection of the vapor deposition directions of the orientation layer material, and a mirror is applied to one of the polarizers, which, in the absence of a cell voltage applied to the liquid crystal display cell (the transparent electrodes are deposited on the inside of the carrier) the light polarizing through the opposing polarizer after rotation through 90 and passing through the polarizer adjacent to the mirror reflects this polarized light through the polarizer adjacent to the mirror, which is then again rotated through 900 through the polarizer located on the incident side of the light can escape to the outside,
and that when the voltage is applied to the electrodes of the liquid crystal display cell, usually an alternating voltage of approximately 1.5 V, the molecules of the liquid crystal are oriented perpendicular to the plane of the carrier and thus the polarization plane of the polarizer passing through the polarizer located on the light incidence side of the liquid crystal display cell and thus polarized can no longer twist, this polarized light can no longer pass through the polarizer attached to the mirror and therefore no more light on the light incidence side
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
of the liquid crystal display cell is reflected, so that the cell (at the correspondingly designed electrode areas) does not transmit light.
In the context of the process according to the invention for the production of new p- (p-alkylbenzoyloxy) benzoic acid phenyl esters of the general formula (I), explained in special cases, the individual procedure can be as follows, the production of the starting materials for the process according to the invention also being of simpler design Connections is explained.

[4 "- (ss-methylbutyl) benzoyloxyl-benzoate-benzoyloxyl-benzoate is explained.
EMI3.3
The method according to the invention is explained in more detail below using an exemplary embodiment.
Example: (+) - 4-n-butylphenyl-4'- [4- (ss -methylbutyl) benzoyloxy] benzoate (see Equation 8).
A solution of 1.05 g (0.005 mol) of (+) - 4- (methylbutyl) benzoyl chloride in 4 ml of pyridine was stirred while stirring a solution of 1.35 g (0.005 mol) of 4-n-butylphenyl -4'-hydroxybenzoate added in 6 ml of pyridine. After stirring for 8 hours, the reaction mixture was acidified with dilute hydrochloric acid and extracted with ether. The combined ether solutions were washed with water, dilute sodium hydroxide solution and water and then dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was evaporated and the residue was recrystallized from ethanol, giving 1.5 g (67.5%) (+) - 4-n-butylphenyl-4 '- [4 "- (ss-methylbutyl) benzoyloxy] - received benzoate; K- "Ch 77, 1 to 77, 4 C, CH + I 152 C.
K + Ch here means the transition from the crystalline phase to the chiral state, that is to say the melting point of the substance produced, whereas Ch B I means the transition from the chiral state to the isotropic state, that is to say the clearing point of the substance produced.
The (+) - 4- (-methylbutyl) benzoyl chloride required as the starting material was prepared as follows. a:): (+) - ss-methylbutyl-4-toluenesulfonate (see equation 1).

The mixture was then diluted with excess water, stirred in an ice bath for 2 h and extracted 4 times with 250 ml of ether each time. The ether extract was washed with cold 6N hydrochloric acid until all pyridine was removed. Then it was washed with water and the organic phase was dried over sodium sulfate and potassium carbonate.
The solvent was stripped off and the residue was distilled in vacuo to give 227 g (93.4%) of (+) - ss-methylbutyl-4-toluenesulfonate, b.p. 2.27 = 133 to 138 ° C.

a2): (+) - (ss-methylbutyl) benzene (see Equation 2).
A phenyl magnesium bromide ether solution was prepared from 64.5 g (0.41 mol) bromobenzene, 9.85 g (0.41 mol) magnesium shavings and 500 ml anhydrous ether. The reagent was cooled and then 200 g (0.82 mol) of (+) - ss-methylbutyl-4-toluenesulfonate in 800 ml of ether were added dropwise. After the addition had ended, the reaction mixture was stirred for 2 h, refluxed for 2 h and then left to stand overnight. Then was. added aqueous sulfuric acid until a clear solution is formed. The phases were separated, the aqueous phase was extracted 3 times with 250 ml of ether each time and the combined organic phases were washed with sodium bicarbonate solution and water and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate.
The solvent was evaporated and the residue was subjected to steam distillation. Fractional distillation of the crude product under reduced pressure gave 38.7 g (64.8%) (+) - ss-methylbutylbenzene, bp 12 = 74 to 77 C. a): (+) - 4- (ss-methylbutyl) -acetophenone (see Equation 3).
36 g (0.24 mol) of (+) - ss-methylbutylbenzene were stirred with a solution of 24 g (0.31 mol) of acetyl chloride and 48 g (0.36 mol) of aluminum chloride in 185 ml carbon tetrachloride from 0 to 5 C. admitted. Then the mixture was stirred for a further 2 h and the resulting reaction mixture was poured into a mixture of 130 ml of concentrated hydrochloric acid and 260 g of ice. The organic phase was washed twice with 130 ml of 2N hydrochloric acid, 130 ml of saturated sodium bicarbonate solution and finally with water and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was stripped off and the residue was distilled in vacuo to give 38 g (83%) (+) - 4- (6-methylbutyl) acetophenone, bp. 0.3 = 93 to 940C.
EMI4.1
Then a solution of 10 g sodium hydroxide in 15 ml water was added. 27.5 g (0.145 mol) of (+) -4- (ss-methylbutyl) acetophenone were then added dropwise to the solution with stirring at 70 to 850C. The mixture was stirred for a further hour, after which the excess sodium hypochlorite was destroyed with aqueous sodium bisulfite solution. After cooling to room temperature, the reaction mixture was acidified with concentrated hydrochloric acid. The solid was collected and washed with water. The air-dried crude product was recrystallized from ethanol, 19 g (69%) (+) - 4- (ss-methylbutyl) -benzoic acid of mp = 134 to 135 C being obtained. a5): (+) - 4- (ss-Methylbutyl) benzoyl chloride (see Equation 5).
A mixture of 19 g (0.1 mol) of (+) - 4- (ss-methylbutyD-benzoic acid and 30 ml of thionyl chloride was heated to reflux for 4 h. Then excess thionyl chloride was distilled off under ordinary pressure. The residue was distilled in vacuo, 19 g (91.5%) of (+) - 4- (ss-methylbutyl) benzoyl chloride, bp. 0.5 to 0.6 = 90 to 960C, were obtained.
The 4-n-butylphenyl 4'-hydroxybenzoate also required as a starting material was prepared in the following manner. b: 4-n-butylphenol (see equation 6).
A cold solution of 28.95 g (0.419 mol) sodium nitrite in 90 ml water was added to a mixture of 60 g (0.402 mol) 4-n-butylaniline, 135 g concentrated sulfuric acid and 300 ml water at 0-5 C added dropwise with stirring. After the addition had ended, the excess nitrous acid was tested with potassium iodide starch paper and destroyed by adding urea. The resulting cold diazonium salt solution was slowly added to a boiling solution of 210 ml of water, 375 g of sulfuric acid and 285 g of anhydrous sodium sulfate. The resulting reaction mixture was subjected to steam distillation, the distillate was collected until clear and saturated with sodium chloride.
The resulting solution was extracted with ether and the combined ether extracts were dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was distilled off and the residue was distilled in vacuo to give 44 g (73.3%) of 4-n-butylphenol, boiling point 4.6 = 106 ° C. or: 4-n-butylphenyl 4'-hydroxybenzoate (see equation 7).
5.83 g (0.038 mol) of phosphoryl chloride were added to a mixture of 13.8 g (0.1 mol) of 4-hydro-> cybenzoic acid and 15 g (0.1 mol) of 4-n-butylphenol. The reaction mixture was under
