<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The invention relates to a method for discharging settled and thickened sludge from containers, in particular slurried minerals or ores from sludge collecting pockets of lamellar thickeners.
When processing minerals and ores, there is the problem of separating the solids from water from a slurry of finely ground minerals and ores, be it to return the water contained in the sludge to the working process or the solids for the purpose of further processing to deposit as little water as possible.
So-called round thickeners are known for separating water and solids in a slurry, which consist of a large flat container with a slightly inclined bottom and have a dip tube as a slurry inlet. The sunken solids are moved to the center of the floor by a slowly rotating crusher and suctioned off there. The round thickener has the disadvantage that it requires very large surface dimensions of the settling areas. In order to reduce the large area requirement, inclined plates with a small vertical distance are arranged in the settling area, as a result of which the effective settling area is multiplied without increasing the outer dimensions.
These thickeners, known as lamella thickeners, have a much higher degree of utilization per unit volume than a lamella-free thickener, but have the disadvantage that the thickened sludge has a relatively low solids concentration. H. sludge of a relatively lower density is obtained.
It has also been proposed to vibrate the slurry at 50 Hz and above. However, this did not significantly increase the sludge density.
The patent owner has recognized that the reason for the low density of the sludge discharged from the thickener is that only the less dense portions of the sludge are detected in the feed area of the discharge openings of the sludge collecting pockets of the thickener. The formation of chimney-like channels in the area of the axis of the sludge collecting pockets, through which the thinner portions of the sludge are sucked through the deeper layers of thicker sludge. The chimney formation is also not prevented by the known relatively high-frequency vibration of the sludge.
The object of the invention is to develop a method by means of which relatively high density sludges can be discharged from a container, in particular from the sludge pockets of a lamellar thickener. According to the invention, this is achieved in that the sludge during the discharge in the container and / or in the discharge line, preferably in the region of the outlet opening of the container, is set in shock-like vibrations of at most 10, preferably between 2 and 3 Hz. Surprisingly, it has been shown that, due to these very low-frequency vibrations, the sludge is compacted in the lower regions of the sludge collection pockets, the above-mentioned chimney formation being avoided. The discharge can take place solely on the basis of gravity or by pumping.
The forced discharge has the advantage that it permits a higher solids concentration without causing difficulties due to the strongly increasing sludge viscosity. The low-frequency vibrations are preferably generated by the pumps which forcibly discharge the sludge, with diaphragm and piston pumps in particular having proven to be suitable. The delivery frequency of the pumps is set according to the desired frequency of the low-frequency vibration.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is that the discharge speed of the sludge from the container is controlled as a function of the sludge density, the discharge speed being increased as the sludge density increases. As a result, a slurry of constant density is obtained on the one hand, and on the other hand an optimal degree of utilization of the thickening devices is obtained.
Furthermore, the amplitude of the shock-shaped vibrations is expediently controlled as a function of the sludge density and / or the discharge speed, the amplitude being increased when the sludge thickness decreases or the discharge speed increases. A further preferred embodiment of the invention is that the frequency of the vibrations is controlled as a function of the sludge density and / or the discharge speed, the frequency of the vibrations increasing when the sludge density is reduced or the discharge speed is increased
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
becomes. By appropriately adjusting the amplitude or frequency, it is easily possible to set both the density and the discharge rate of the sludge to be discharged within optimal limits.
The invention also relates to a device for carrying out the method according to the invention with a pump, for example a piston or diaphragm pump in the discharge line, which is characterized in that the pump can be driven in an abrupt manner with a delivery frequency corresponding to the desired frequency of the abrupt oscillations.
The invention will now be described in more detail with reference to the drawings. 1 to 3 show in schematic form three exemplary embodiments of devices for carrying out the method according to the invention.
1 to 3 with --1 - is a sludge collecting bag of a thickener (not shown)
EMI2.1
--7-- pump --3-- pumped into a pressure line --4--. The pump can be a diaphragm pump --3a-- (Fig. 1), a piston pump-3b- (Fig. 2) or a centrifugal pump (Fig. 3). The pressure line - can be supplied with cleaning fluid via valves --11, 13--.
With --9-- is a control device for controlling the delivery rate of the pump and with - 10-- the drive of the pump --3--. The control device --9-- in the diaphragm pump - according to FIG. 1 or the piston pump - 3b - according to FIG. 2 determines the frequency and the amplitude of the pump membrane or the pump piston, preferably also the rise or fall time the vibration caused by the membrane or the piston controlled. The fall time of the vibration caused by the pumps -3a and 3b during the intake stroke is expediently greater than the rise time during the backward movement of the membrane or the piston. The delivery frequency of the pumps -3a and 3b is a maximum of 10 Hz, preferably 2 to 3 Hz.
The pumps --3a and 3b-- thus cause the sludge --5-- to be forced out of the pocket --1--, on the one hand, and on the other hand they practice the sludge --5-- in the pocket-l low-frequency compression impacts , which compress the sludge and prevent thin components from being carried out of the bag --1--. In the embodiment according to FIG. 1, a sensor --8 - for measuring the density of the sludge --5-- is provided in the pocket-1 - and in that according to FIG. 2 in the pressure line --3 -. The measurement signals from the sensor - are fed to the control device --9--.
As a result, the frequency and the amplitude of the vibrations generated by the pump can be optimally regulated, the frequency and, if necessary, also the amplitude being increased when the sludge density is reduced.
3, a centrifugal pump --3c-- is used as the pump. The low-frequency vibrations of the sludge are generated by membranes, plates or the like which are arranged in the sludge collecting pocket-1 and which are connected to a vibrating device-6--. The device --6-- is driven by a unit --10a--. A control coupling element is designated by --12--. The frequency and the amplitude of the vibrations are controlled by a control device --9a-- depending on the density of the sludge to be discharged. For this purpose, a pressure sensor --8-- is arranged in the pressure line --4--, which measures the density of the discharged sludge.
The measuring signals of the sensor --8-- are connected to the control device --9-- influencing the speed of the centrifugal pump --3c--. As a result, the discharge speed, the frequency and the amplitude of the vibration generator can be optimally regulated as a function of the density of the sludge.
