The usage is as follows: The sending and the receiving person both have such a device, with the same number of character rows and the characters in these rows in the same order.
The sending person sets the roller by means of button k to a certain agreed-upon code number at the index i and writes in the letter or the dispatch form the characters of the row that then appears above the scale t in the slot s, which correspond to the letters and numbers to be read on the scale t of the text. For each letter or each letter group (word) the key c is depressed and for the next letter or letter group (word) the then appearing row characters of the roller above scale t are used, etc.
As soon as only the recipient knows the code, he can set it at index i and then enter the text using the scale /. and convert back the secret characters that appear behind the slot s each time a key is pressed.
Of course, the most varied combinations can be made with the apparatus ... and permutations, so a different number can be chosen each time; this can be changed by appointment after a certain number of letters or words; You can agree that after each individual or a certain number of letters or words the key c is not pressed once, but twice, three times or increasing in a progressive number, i.e. twice after the first or third letter or word, after the second or fourth letter or word three or four times, etc.
