EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The invention relates to an anode / electrolyte unit for an alkaline primary element, in particular for an alkaline primary element, in particular for a manganese dioxide or zinc / air element, and a method for producing said unit.
It has already been proposed that the structural combination of anode and alkaline electrolyte with the addition of a thickener, e.g. B. carboxymethyl cellulose to create an electrode whose external consistency was such that it offered a significant simplification of the production technology for alkaline manganese dioxide elements.
Cut-resistant or viscous gels were used as anodes for the electrochemical cell.
It was not until the development of alkaline zinc-air elements that the paste received a new objective function in addition to the requirement for good processability; it should optimally protect the zinc of the electrodes from the ingress of atmospheric oxygen.
Practice shows that most of the organic and inorganic thickeners that have become known do not meet this requirement, but on the contrary accelerate zinc corrosion and thus promote the passivation of the zinc electrode, so that so far only carboxymethyl cellulose or flour
Starch gels for the production of alkaline manganese dioxide or alkaline zinc-air elements have prevailed.
The carboxymethyl cellulose or used in practice. Flour-starch gels for alkaline primary cells, however, are not resistant to alkali and oxidation over a long period of time.
Because of this, they tend to clog, so that the existing gel is not able to completely hold the alkaline electrolyte and it is still not possible to do without the installation of technologically complex sealing elements. With the thickeners used, it is not possible to achieve the
To limit zinc corrosion or the zinc passivation of the zinc electrode or even to eliminate it completely.
It is precisely through the decomposition of the gels that the additional atmospheric oxygen in alkaline air-zinc elements can no longer be sufficiently kept away from the zinc particles of the electrode. This inevitably leads to a limitation of the shelf life and the open service life of the elements for the consumer.
Certainly one can limit the capillary creep of the alkaline electrolyte by an unprofitable, expensive and complicated technical effort in the sealing or by adding higher alcohols to the gel. The latter variant is of little use, since these higher alcohols are not resistant to oxidation. As a result of the chemical reaction taking place, they are converted into the salts of the corresponding carboxylic acids and thus lose their effectiveness enormously.
The purpose of the invention is to eliminate the aforementioned disadvantages of paste electrodes for galvanic primary elements.
The invention is based on the object of using a structural combination of anode and alkaline electrolyte to create a zinc paste electrode for alkaline primary elements with an oxidation- and alkali-resistant gel former, the gel former having other important functions in addition to thickening the alkaline electrolyte, such as reducing the capillary creep of the alkaline Electrolytes, the inhibition of zinc corrosion, the reduction of zinc passivation and an obstruction of the oxygen diffusion to the individual zinc particles in the case of alkaline zinc / air elements should simultaneously fulfill.
According to the invention, the object is achieved in that the anode / electrolyte unit consists of a paste of zinc powder, an alkaline electrolyte and 1 to 10% by weight, based on the total weight of the unit, of polyacrylic or polymethacrylic acid or salts of these acids .
In addition to a large chain length of the polymers, a large number of saponified carboxyl groups in the molecule is decisive for obtaining a stable gel. These saponified carboxyl groups determine the solubility or swellability of the organic polyelectrolyte.
The invention will be explained in more detail below using an exemplary embodiment. 4 parts of a polyacrylic ester emulsion of the above are added dropwise to 36 parts of a potassium hydroxide solution, heated to 90 ° C. and containing 5% zinc oxide, while stirring continuously. During this process, hydrolysis sets in quickly and the alcohol escapes in gaseous form. After brief foaming of the solution, it is cooled and 60 parts of amalgamated zinc powder are introduced.
If, according to the invention, an ester of polyacrylic acid is dissolved in the alkaline electrolyte, it is hydrolyzed:
EMI1.1
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
This hydrolysis produces the salt of polyacrylic acid, a so-called polyelectrolyte.
The polyelectrolyte, which is also a gel former, improves the conductivity of the solidified electrolyte compared to normal or conventional gel formers such as carboxymethyl cellulose or potato starch by 10 to 150/0 with the same viscosity.
In addition, the polyacrylate gel no longer contains any oxidizable groups compared to carboxymethyl cellulose and starch, so that this chemical equivalence provides alkali and oxidation resistance.
Since the electrolyte on the zinc oxide is oversaturated or partially precipitated during discharge, the polyacrylate gel solidifies through chelation with the Zn2 + ion:
EMI2.1
Measurements of the creep speed of the alkaline electrolyte on capillary zinc and nickel surfaces showed a decrease in the creep speed to half of the original value when a potential difference was applied.
Zinc corrosion measurements had a positive inhibitor protection value of S = + 30% as a result. The inhibiting effect of polyacrylates does not appear to be significant, but compared to the negative protection values of carboxymethyl cellulose S = -80%, wheat flour S == - 1200/0 and wheat starch S = 120% at the same concentrations, it is considerable.
The zinc oxides produced during the discharge partly contribute to the fact that the clamping voltage of alkaline primary elements with zinc anodes slowly drops. The zinc powder electrode is passivated and this can only be counteracted by adding polyacrylate additives.
When using polyacrylates as gel formers, the discharge characteristic is therefore improved, and the zinc yield of the zinc powder electrode increases from 85 to 90%.
This effect is explained by the constantly changing state of deposition of the ZnO and the formation of Zn chelates with the polyacrylate chains.

gene.
The gel delays the diffusion of oxygen, shows no signs of aging and adheres firmly to the walls of the vessel so that no cracks appear afterwards.
Thus, it offers the zinc powder optimal protection against penetrating oxygen.
