<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

only slightly over-tempered individual surfaces are preferred, which are not yet adherent, deform and are thus overstretched. The object of the invention is to design an insulating body of the type explained at the beginning or to specify such a method for producing this insulating body that, while avoiding the disadvantages mentioned, namely different expansion of the film material and tendency to

Such an insulating insert is produced using a heatable one
Forming stamp according to the invention in that a plastic film is introduced into the preformed hollow body, heated to its flow point and brought into a pre-stretched, tension-free state largely corresponding to the shape of the hollow body and then pressed against the inner wall of the hollow body by means of a pressure medium, wherein the plastic film is held sealingly by the stamp on the upper edge of the hollow body. By pre-stretching the foil by means of the stamp, the foil constantly remaining in contact with the stamp heating it, approximately the size of the foil is achieved without tension that it has in the finished insulating insert.
With this size or with this almost final deformation of the film, the film can be pressed against the wall of the hollow body within a short time by means of a pressure medium, with hardly noticeable flow processes occurring along the surfaces due to the extensive pre-stretching of the film. Since there is no substantial stretching and also no flow of the film along the wall of the foam body to be connected to it, the total heat content of the film can be used for melting on the hollow body. On the basis of this fact in connection with the fact that no noteworthy shear forces occur on the connection surface, since the film is applied without tension, a particularly good adhesion between film and foam body is achieved.
This also enables the film to have a uniform wall thickness, since it is stretched in constant contact with the heated stamp, so that the film is expanded evenly. The uneven stretching of the plastic film in the known process, which is due to the progressive adhesion of the film material to the foam wall during the drawing process, is avoided because the film is only pressed against the inner wall of the hollow body after it has almost completely expanded.
Since, according to the invention, the flow point of the film is above the melting point of the foam body, the top surface layer of the foam plastic is slightly melted, which, in addition to an intimate connection between foam plastic and plastic film, results in a particularly smooth surface of the finished insulating insert even when using thin films an initial thickness of about 0.5 mm. As a result of the melting, those elevations or projections are leveled out on the surface of the foam body which would become apparent when using particularly thin foils. The melting of the foam surface also causes a certain degree of surface solidification, which promotes the use of thin plastic films.
The

Surface hardening is also promoted by using a pressure medium to press the plastic film against the foam surface. By this way of making a

According to a development of the invention, the upper edge of the hollow body is during the

This measure is necessary in particular in the case of large hollow bodies to be concealed with a thin plastic film in order to ensure that the edge of the hollow body which is exposed to heat and pressure for the longest during manufacture cannot melt away. In addition, overloading the plastic film is also avoided.

Flange of the stamp on a pipeline for introducing a coolant. Through this the
Flange of the stamp can be cooled in a simple manner so that no deformation of the upper edge of the foam body occurs, but the adhesion of the film to the foam body is not impaired.
Further developments of the invention result from the remaining subclaims. The invention is illustrated in the drawings, for example. 1 shows a section through an insulating insert according to the invention; 2 shows a section through a hollow body made of foam and a device for introducing a film into the hollow body.
As can be seen from Fig. 1, the inner wall of a hollow body made of rigid polystyrene foam - l - is covered with a plastic film --2 - whose flow point is above the melting point of the foam material. The film - 2 - is, as will be described below, connected to the foam by lamination and is used to achieve a smooth surface of the hollow body, which is used as an insulating insert, in particular for portable cool boxes. The film --2-- is folded over around the upper edge --3-- of the hollow body --1-- and fixed on the outside of the hollow body.
During the lamination process, the film is connected to the surface of the hollow body in such a way that its edge-4-on the outside merges into the surface of the foam body without a shoulder. The foil lies in a recess --5-- formed during the lamination process in the foam body.
To produce the insulating insert consisting of the foam body and the plastic film, the film 2 clamped in a frame 6 is preformed by a heatable stamp - 7 - which has a lower part - 8 - and a flange - 9-- has. The lower part --8-- corresponds roughly to the interior of the hollow body, which is raised by a table - 10 - which can be moved in the vertical direction, until the edge - 3-on

Since the edge - 3 - is in contact with the hot stamp for the longest time and the risk of overheating these edge parts is particularly great, the splash - 9 - is cooled to the extent that coolant is introduced into the pipeline --13 - that a connection occurs between the film and the foam surface, but the latter is not overheated.
It can be seen from the above illustration that preformed hollow bodies can be clad with foils of any thickness by lamination using simple tools in one operation, with the inner lining not requiring pre-deformation in a separate operation. These insulating inserts therefore only cause low production costs and are characterized by a smooth, solidified surface and low weight.
