Feed with anticoccidic activity
The invention relates to a feed with an anticoccidic effect which contains new esters of 6, 7-alkoxy-4-hydroxy-3-quinolmcarboxylic acids as active ingredients.
Coccidiosis, a widespread and economically significant poultry disease, is caused by a variety of coccidia including Eimeria tenella, Eimeria acervulina, and Eimeria necatrix. The new compounds used according to the invention are highly effective against these coccidia. When added to a balanced nutrient feed in an amount of about 0.006 to about 0.1 percent by weight and fed to chickens infected with coccidiosis, the mortality or sickness that usually results from coccidiosis is overcome and exerted a beneficial effect on the growth and general condition of the birds.
The active compounds are lower alkyl esters of the 6, 7-di-lower. -Alkoxy-4-hydroxy-3-quino-lincarboxylic acid, with the general formula
EMI1.1
where RundR denotes a lower alkyl radical having 2-4 carbon atoms and R 1 denotes a lower alkyl radical.
The preparation of these new compounds can be carried out according to a suggestion made elsewhere that one reduces a corresponding 1, 2-di-lower alkoxy-4-nitrobenzene, the solution of the reduced product in the presence of a thermoregulator, eg. B. a eutectic mixture of diphenyl ether and diphenyl, mixed with a corresponding di-lower alkyl-lower alkoxymethylene malonate and heated the mixture.
Examples of esters preferably used in the feed according to the invention are the methyl or ethyl esters of 1,2-diethoxy-, 1,2-dipropoxy-, 1,2-dibutoxy- or 1,2-diisopropoxy-4-hydroxy- quinolinecarboxylic acid.
The feed preferably contains 0.02-0.1% by weight of the ester.
The processing of the new compounds into a form which permits convenient administration is carried out in a simple manner by mixing them with the feed as indicated above. If desired, the compounds can also form tablets, gelatin capsules, suspensions or the like. Preparations are processed which also contain suitable carriers and other additives customary in pharmacy.
