<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Overheating indicator
The invention relates to a device for determining the physical conditions on or near an electric motor and for displaying this physical state at a location remote from the motor.
In particular, it relates to overheating protection for a motor and a deep well pressure display device in connection with submersible pump motor units for deep wells.
When pumping liquid from oil or water wells, it is advisable under certain conditions to use a submersible electric motor and pump unit located near the bottom of the well in the stalls of pumps located in the well, which are driven by motors fixed at ground level is. It is advisable to provide overheating protection on electric motors, which switches off the motor electrically in the event of overheating, be it due to overload or insufficient circulation of coolant in motor types in which the circulation of a coolant causes cooling.
Such protection devices for electric motors usually consist either of a heat-actuated switch which is arranged in the motor and causes the electrical circuit to be interrupted in the event of excessive heat, or they are designed as a circuit breaker which is responsive to excessive current passage. or they consist of a combination of these two measures.
While these usual types of overload and overheating protection are sufficient for above-ground electric motors and smaller types of submersible motors. it turned out. that these protective devices were inadequate for large-format electric smoke engines. The switch operated by heat, which is arranged in the motor as protection against overheating, is switched in this way. that it directs the current flow to the motor. This arrangement is particularly unsatisfactory and impractical with large submersible motors, since such a switch, large enough to handle the normal current to the motor, would be too large to be placed in a suitable position in the motor in a position that would indicate overheating of the motor Motors would respond.
The somewhat remotely located overload protection of the circuit breaker type, which responds to excessive current flow to the motor, is unsatisfactory in a submersible motor, since harmful overheating can occur due to factors such as insufficient circulation of coolant in the motor without being adequately caused by a high increase in the current for operating the breaker is noticeable.
Although sufficient protection would be provided by a heat-sensitive device in the submersible motor that operates a remotely mounted circuit breaker via a separate circuit, such a system would require separate wiring in addition to the feeder cable and the cost of such a line would be disadvantageous in deep well installations. The circuit breaker would necessarily have to be arranged above ground in order to enable the circuit to be closed again after the circuit breaker has been actuated due to overheating.
In addition, when drilling deep, it is desirable to get an idea of the pressure of the well fluid near or at the pump. As is well known in the art, knowledge of this base well pressure can provide other valuable insights and determine such factors as optimal pumping speeds. For example, if the basic well pressure is known
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
(down hold pressure) and knowledge of the liquid level in the bore obtained by other methods, the specific weight of the liquid can be determined.
Accordingly, the invention creates an arrangement whereby a physical state variable such as temperature or pressure can be measured at or near an electric motor and these measured values are fed to a point remote from the motor, the feed line to the motor as a transmission device for the temperature or pressure relevant signal is used.
A main object of the invention is to provide a device and an arrangement for determining a physical state and for superimposing a signal on the current transmitted by a feed line, wherein the signal can be recorded and evaluated at a remote location for determining the determined physical state.
Another object of the invention is to create a new device for determining the temperature of an electric submersible motor and / or the fluid pressure around the motor. whereby a special signal superimposed on the power flow to the motor is sent out and evaluated at a remote location to display the recorded temperature and / or pressure.
Another object of the invention is the creation of a new device for the overheating protection of large submersible motors, in which the overheating is determined by a temperature test in the motor and an electrical signal using a compensation transformer which is connected between the two conductors on the motor two of the supply current lines is superimposed. and also such a device, - in which the signal is picked up at a remote location by a second compensation transformer, which is also arranged between the two lines, and thus actuates a circuit breaker due to the overheating indicated by the temperature tester.
Another object is such an arrangement with a. To provide pressure tester, which indicates the pressure at a remote point by means of a signal superimposed on the power supply lines.
In detail, the invention relates to overheating protection for large electric motors, in which the temperature measuring point is small and can be arranged in a suitable manner in the motor, as well as a circuit breaker which is arranged at a remote location and operated by such a temperature tester by means of signal transmission via the motor current conductor becomes.
Further objects and advantages of the invention are explained in more detail in the following description with reference to the drawing. In the drawing show:
1 shows a partial section of a typical arrangement of a submersible electric motor and pump unit in a well bore; FIG. 2 shows a schematic representation of a circuit diagram of the measuring and detection device of the invention in connection with a three-phase electric motor: FIG. 3 shows a schematic representation similar to that of FIG. 2, which shows a particular embodiment of the invention; Figure 4 is a schematic illustration similar to Figure 2 showing a modified embodiment of the invention; 5 shows a schematic illustration similar to FIG. 2, which shows a further modified embodiment of the invention.
1 shows a well bore 10, a large part between the bottom part of the well bore and the ground level 11 being omitted. It is evident from the following description that the invention can be applied to any depth of a bore, but is particularly well suited and advantageous when it is used for deep bores; this is due to the size and type of the electric motors used, as well as the length of the wiring that is additionally required without using the invention. The submersible electric motor and pump unit can be of any conventional type, such as one of the type shown, which has an electric motor 12, a sealing portion 13 and a pump 14.
As is common with such types of units, the engine 12 contains a lubricating and cooling liquid which, in use, circulates through the engine, including the. : Seal portion 13 may contain this liquid. A power supply cable 15 extends from the electric motor 12 in the well bore 10 upwards over the ground level 11 to a control panel, which is generally designated 16 and in turn is connected to an electrical power source. A conduit or pipe 17 extends upward from the pump 14 above the ground 11 for conveying the pumped liquid.
For purposes of illustration, it will be assumed that the motor 12 is a three phase motor since this is the type most widely used in deep borehole motor pump units, although it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the invention is equally applicable to single phase or other multiphase motors . 2-5, the three-phase motor 12 is shown schematically and the three conductors 15a, 15b and 15c of the power cable 15 are shown separately. The control panel 16 is indicated by dashed lines
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
and connected through a circuit breaker 17 to a suitable source of three phase power.
In Fig. 2, the basic idea and its implementation according to the invention is shown schematically. Signaling device 18 is mounted in motor 12 in any convenient arrangement and is electrically connected by conductors 19 and 20 to wires 15a and 15b of the power cord. The signal device 18 contains the necessary measuring device for determining the physical state, such as a temperature tester, a bimetal switch responsive to heat and / or a device responsive to liquid pressure. Each of the measuring devices is installed in a suitable manner in the circuit of the signal device 18 to detect a change in the circuit, such as, for.
B. to bring about a change in a resistance or a capacitor, an opening or closing of a switch or an induction of a current as soon as a certain change occurs in the physical conditions measured by the measuring device. The signaling device 18 can comprise any type of electrical or electronic device for generating a distinguishable electrical signal and for superimposing this signal on the power current flowing through the lines 15a and 15b.
For example, this signal can be a direct current or an alternating current of different phase or frequency with respect to the power current. The electrical resistance of the device 18 is proportional
EMI3.1
measured physical state changed.
Furthermore, according to FIG. 2, a measuring device 21 is provided in the control panel 16 and electrical via the
Wires 15a and 15b of the power cord connected. The measuring device 21 can comprise any conventional electrical or electronic components and circuits that are suitable for detecting or measuring the electrical signal which has been superimposed on the current flow in the wires 15a and 15b by means of the signaling device 18. The components of the measuring device 21 can then be used in a suitable manner
Way register the signal or react to this detected signal and thereby indicate the particular physical state as it is observed by the measuring devices in the signal device 18.
For example, if a temperature measuring device in the signal device 18 indicates overheating of the motor 12, the corresponding electrical signal is determined by the device 21, which in turn actuates the motor control 24 via the lines 22 and 23 to the effect that the circuit is interrupted and thus the motor before a Overheating is protected. Specific examples of components which can be used for the signaling device 18 and measuring device 21 are described below with reference to FIGS. 3, 4 and 5; however, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that many types of components and circuits can be used for devices 18 and 21 to achieve the functions described above.
According to FIG. 3, a compensation transformer is provided in the motor 12 with a primary winding 25 and a secondary winding 26 with the same number of turns. The primary winding 25 lies directly on the lines 15a and 15b and has a relatively high resistance, so that the current flowing through the winding 25 is low. The winding 26 is connected to the line 15a and then via a direct current source 27 and a bimetal switch 28 to the line 15b. The resistance of the winding 26 is also relatively high. The bimetallic switch 28 can be very small, because the current flowing through it is very small and can therefore be arranged at any critical point in the motor 12 in order to respond to the first signs of overheating.
The switch 28 can be of the normally open type, which closes when heated to a predetermined temperature and thus indicates overheating. The DC power source 27 can be of any conventional type, such as. B. a battery or a rectifier. By closing the bimetal switch 2B, a direct voltage is applied to the lines 15a and 15b, whereby a direct current flows through the lines 15a and 15b which is superimposed on the alternating current. The windings 25 and 26 of the compensation transformer are arranged in such a way that the alternating voltage between the lines 15a and 15b is reduced to zero via the switch 28, so that the switch 28 is not exposed to this high line voltage.
A similar compensation transformer is provided in control panel 16 and has a primary winding 29 and a secondary winding 30. Primary winding 29 is connected to lines 15a and 15b and secondary winding 30 is connected to line 15a through relay winding 31 on line 15b. The windings 29 and 30 have the same number of turns and have a high resistance. In addition, the windings 29 and 30 are also arranged so that they bring the mains voltage across the relay winding to zero. The direct current signal superimposed on the mains current after the bimetal switch 28 has been closed is picked up at the compensation transformer in the control desk 16 and
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
drives a direct current through relay 31, thereby energizing it.
The relay 31 can normally be either open or closed and, when actuated, causes the motor control 24 to interrupt the feed current and thus protect the motor 12 from overheating.
In Fig. 4 suitable components for measuring the liquid pressure in the bottom section of the well bore 10 are shown. A compensation transformer is provided in the motor 12, which has a primary winding 32 and a secondary winding 33, both of which have the same number of turns and are wound in such a way that they supply a counter voltage to the voltage in the other winding. The primary winding 32 lies directly on the lines 15a and 15b. The secondary winding 32 is connected to the line 15a and then via a variable resistor 34 to the line 15b. The value of the resistor 34 is varied by any conventional hydraulic or mechanical device that is responsive to the fluid pressure in the borehole 10.
The resistance 34 will therefore have a specific value for each specific fluid pressure in the borehole 10. By controlling the resistor 34 as a function of the fluid pressure, the current through the secondary winding 32 is changed and thus the signal which is superimposed on the feed current in the lines 15a and 15b. bels and the secondary winding 36 is connected from the line 15a via a display device 37 to the line 15b. The display device 37 can be a voltage indicator of the usual type in order to display quantitatively the signal superimposed in the feed line.
If the device 37 and the resistor 34 are calibrated in a suitable manner, the pressure to which the resistor 34 responds can be read directly from the device 37.
In Fig. 5, an arrangement of components is shown, both an overheating protection for the
Motor as well as an indication of the fluid pressure in the well bore. A compensation transformer with a primary winding 38 and a secondary winding 39 is provided in the motor 12.
The primary winding 38 lies directly on the lines 15a and 15b of the feed cable. One side of the winding 39 is connected to the line 15a and the other side is connected via the direct current source 40 to a bimetal switch 41 and variable resistor 42, which are connected in parallel, and then to the line 15b. The bimetal switch 41 can be essentially the same as the bimetal switch 28 described earlier and is preferably open in the normal state and closes when excessive heat occurs. The variable resistor 42 can be substantially the same as the variable resistor 34 and also function in the same way to indicate the well bottom pressure.
A compensation transformer with a primary winding 43 and a secondary winding 44 is provided in the control panel 16. A voltage indicator 46 and a relay 47 are connected in parallel and arranged between the line 15b and one end of the secondary winding 44. The other end of the secondary winding 44 is connected to the line 15a and the primary winding 43 is directly connected to the lines 15a and 15b. If the motor 12 is working within or below a safety temperature range, the bimetal switch is open and the change in the value of the variable resistor 42 provides a signal in the lines 15a and 15b. which is indicated by the voltage indicator 46.
If the motor reaches the upper limit of the safe operating temperature, the bimetal switch 41 closes, whereby the control resistor is cross-connected and supplies a different direct current signal. which is superimposed on the feed current in lines 15a and 15b. This signal actuates the relay 47 to open a circuit breaker in the engine control 24. Therefore, it can be seen that the fluid pressure at the bottom of the bore is displayed by the voltmeter 46 until the engine is overheated, after which the signal from the pressure indicator, the resistor 42, of which the temperature display device, the bimetal switch 41, is suppressed and the supply current is switched off.
It can thus be seen that the invention provides an apparatus and arrangement which indicates a physical state at a point measured at a distant point, using the usual feeder cables and not using special wires for the measurement and display system is required. This is particularly advantageous for protecting a submersible motor used in deep boreholes from overheating due to the size of this electric motor and the length of the feeder cables required.
Although special components for measuring the particular physical state have been described, which generate a signal and superimpose this signal on the supply current, pick up the signal from the usual supply current and display or react to it in a suitable manner, it is obvious to the person skilled in the art that various Deviations and modifications to achieve these functions are possible. Accordingly, the invention is not limited to just that
