The diaphragm is designed in such a way that the gases formed during normal storage of the cell diffuse through the diaphragm and that, in the event of excessive gas accumulation, in the event of the cell being misused, for example excessively high overloading, it quickly ruptures, and the like. between before reaching the pressure at which an explosion of the cell container is likely. This one-piece with the seal diaphragm can be in the
Seal can be formed by appropriate non-cutting or cutting deformation and inevitably prevents any leakage of the electrolyte at this point.
A number of factors must be taken into account when designing any gas vent diaphragm, which is also designed as a safety vent.
The rupture of the diaphragm is dependent on the physical properties of the material of the diaphragm, e.g. tensile strength and elongation, and on the dimensions of the diaphragm, i.e. That is, the mechanically stressed area of the diaphragm and the thickness of the diaphragm on its
Scope, d. H. at the point that is locally stressed when pressure is applied to the diaphragm. For a given material, the tear pressure increases with increasing thickness at the periphery of the diaphragm and decreases with increasing area of the diaphragm. The decisive area for the rupture of the diaphragm is the entire area bent under mechanical stress. The turn takes place on the thinnest
Cross section of the diaphragm.
Table I below shows the relationship between tear pressure and diaphragm thickness for the circular diaphragm illustrated in Figs. The values given in Table I were determined in tests in which seals provided with the blow-off diaphragm were attached to a specially equipped hydrogen blow-off device. Except for the presence of an alkaline one
Electrolytes, a factor that has no effect on the function of the diaphragm, all the elements of an alkaline cell were present in the cells tested. The diaphragm used in the tests had a diameter of 6.6 mm; the thickness of the diaphragms was varied as indicated. The
Diaphragms were made of nylon.

As can be seen from the table, the rupture pressure of the diaphragm is linearly related to the thickness of the diaphragm.
The amount of gas withdrawn through the diaphragm depends on the material used for the diaphragm, the gas permeability of the material, the area and thickness of the diaphragm and the pressure difference between the two sides of the diaphragm. It has generally been observed that the amount of gas passage through a diaphragm made of a given material is inversely proportional to the thickness of the diaphragm under constant conditions. Table II below gives the hydrogen gas permeability of various plastics from which the gas-permeable diaphragm according to the invention, designed as a safety blow-off device, can expediently be manufactured.
The table also shows the calculated amount of hydrogen gas withdrawal for each of the circular diaphragms shown in Figures 1 and 2 in a D-size alkaline cell (according to Circular 466 of the National Bureau of Standards of the United States Department of Commerce).
A size D cell has the following dimensions: diameter 3.2 cm, height 5.7 cm, nominal volume 45 ems, weight approx. 96 g. The cell calculations are based on the assumption of a constant area

and thickness of the diaphragm and a pressure difference of 6 atm between both sides of the diaphragm.
In the table below, in the column "Permeability constant", the in cams is 109 times the

Pressure of 1 cm Hg would pass through a cube made of the specified material with a cross section of 1 cm2 and a thickness of 1 cm.

As can be seen from the table, the gas-permeable diaphragm according to the invention, which is also designed as a safety venting element, absolutely prevents an explosion of an alkaline galvanic cell in the event of overcharging or excessive gas development.
When carrying out the invention, it should be noted that the formation of a suitable gas diffusion diaphragm, which allows gas to be extracted in the desired amount, can be calculated from the physical properties of the plastic of the diaphragm and the chosen dimensions of the same, the relationship between the tear pressure and the strength or area of the diaphragm is empirical. Since most plastics are quite elastic, there is no clear relationship between stress and deformation from which the tensile strength of a particular diaphragm can be calculated with complete certainty. The creation of a diaphragm which, at a given pressure, will explode and allow the desired amount of gas to be vented therefore requires some degree of experimentation.
