<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

TpM = Gew.-Teile Kupfer pro Million Gew.-Teile Polyamid.

Process for the production of heat-resistant articles from polyamides
The present invention relates to a process for the production of articles formed from polyamides, in particular artificial fibers, with increased heat resistance, which is achieved by adding stabilizers.
Similar methods and objects are already known.
Polyamides, which are obtained by polymerization of diamines and dicarboxylic acid as well as of aminocarboxylic acid or lactams, have the disadvantage that they change when exposed to elevated temperatures, so that strength and flexibility decrease and that the color becomes darker.
In order to reduce this disadvantage, it has already been proposed (see, for example, US Pat. No. 2, 630, 421 or British Pat. No. 708, 029), the polyamides 2-mercaptobenzimidazole or its salts, preferably in an amount of To mix in 0.1 to 2% by weight. In addition, it was proposed in the patents mentioned to add phosphorus compounds, such as phosphoric acid and organic and / or inorganic phosphates and phosphites, in preferred amounts of 0.1 to 1.0% by weight to the polyamides.
Furthermore, as a third component for stabilizing the polyamides, hydrochloric acid, alkali halides and alkaline earth halides, or ammonium halides, can preferably be used
EMI1.1
To reduce polyamides at relatively high temperatures, the polyamides with copper salts or with a mixture consisting of a copper salt and an inorganic halide are mixed, it also optionally possible to use a phosphorus compound and, if necessary, in combination with catechol.
It has now been found that the heat stability of polyamides can be further increased if the aforementioned substances are mixed with the polyamides in a different combination.
The invention consists in that, in one of the aforementioned processes, the objects are molded from a polyamide which is mixed with 0.5-1.0% by weight of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole and an amount of a copper halide, preferably copper-i-iodide, which lasts 30% -50 parts by weight of metallic copper per million parts by weight of polyamide, was mixed.
The aforementioned substances can be added to the polyamides during various stages of their preparation, e.g. B. the basic substances of the polyamides, the reaction mixture of these substances during the polycondensation process, the resulting melt, or the stabilizers with the granules or flakes obtained from this melt can be rolled, whereby the stabilizers adhere to the surface of the granules.
The above-mentioned combination of substances is important for stabilizing polyamides based on diamines and dicarboxylic acids and also polyamides obtained from aminocarboxylic acids.
In the event that a polymerized aminocarboxylic acid, in particular polyaminocaproic acid, is to be stabilized, the last-mentioned procedure is to be preferred because it also makes it possible to easily stabilize relatively small amounts of the polyamide.
In order to be able to stabilize polyaminocaproic acid with copper iodide and 2-mercaptobenzimidazole in this way, a solution of copper I-acetate is first added to the polyaminocaproic acid grains in the last drying stage, which follows the usual washing of the grains while the grains are turned, after which A potassium iodide solution is added again to fall drying and, after the drying process has ended, the grains are rolled with dry 2-mercaptobenzimidazole.
The copper acetate and potassium iodide are preferably dissolved in such an amount of water that the weight of the added solution is not more than 0.5% based on the weight of the polyamide grains in the dryer. However, it is also possible to mix the polyamides with the stabilizers while they are being worked up in a screw press.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
If the copper iodide is produced from a copper salt and a halide in the presence of the polyamide or its basic substances, the halide can also be used in excess of the copper salt. In this case, the amount of halide can be, for example 0.15% by weight, based on the amount of polyamide.
Optionally, the stabilizers can also be combined with the phosphorus compounds already known in connection with the stabilization of polyamides.
The invention is illustrated in more detail by the following examples, without being restricted thereto.
Example 1: Polyaminocaproic acid with a specific viscosity of 1.50, produced using 0.15% by weight of acetic acid, with a content of 10% by weight of water-insoluble substances, was converted from the melt into the form of a single thread in the usual way processed with a diameter of 3 mm. This monofilament became grains of 3 mm after cooling in water at 20 ° C
EMI2.1
Introduced dryer operating at 100 C and rotating around a horizontal axis. The pressure in the dryer was reduced to 2 mm and the dryer was rotated. As soon as the moisture content of the grains had dropped to 1% by weight, the temperature of the dryer was lowered to 60 ° C. and the vacuum was released. The dryer could then be opened to introduce an aqueous solution of copper acetate.
The amount of solution was approximately equal to 0.5% by weight of the grains.
The temperature in the dryer was then increased again to 100 ° C. and the pressure to 2 mm Hg
EMI2.2
to introduce a solution of potassium iodide in an amount of 0.5% by weight, based on the polyamide.
The solution contained 0.08 wt .-% potassium iodide, based on the polymer. After re-establishing the vacuum at a pressure of 2 mm Hg, the dryer was rotated at 100 ° C. for an additional hour. Finally, after cooling to 600 ° C., powdered 2-mercaptobenzimidazole was added. The grains were also rotated with this substance at 60 ° C. for hours.
From these grains produced in this way, threads were spun using a conventional melt spinning machine, which before winding with a 20% aqueous emulsion of a mixture of 63 parts by weight of glycerol diacetate monooleate and 37 parts by weight of a polyethylene oxide ester of tall oil fatty acids in an amount of 1 % By weight of the threads were trimmed.
After the threads had been pulled, they were heated with air at 2000 C for 3 or 16 hours. The strength of the threads was determined before and after heating (residual strength) as a percentage of the original strength.
The aforementioned procedure was carried out using various amounts of copper salt and 2-mercaptobenzimidazole. The results of these tests are shown in the table below.

TPM = parts by weight of copper per million parts by weight of polyamide.
The information in the table shows that when using a mixture of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole and a copper salt, threads could be obtained in which the strength (residual strength) remaining in the air after heating was greater than when these substances were used individually were applied.
EXAMPLE 2 Filaments consisting of polyaminocaproic acid were produced in accordance with the procedure given in Example 1 with the following modifications.
The freshly spun threads were finished with a 10% strength by weight aqueous emulsion of a mixture of 50 parts by weight of paraffin, 30 parts by weight of ethoxylated oleyl alcohol and 20 parts by weight of etheroxylated phosphoric acid ester of a C 18 alcohol. The amount of size absorbed by the threads was 0.5% by weight.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Only two attempts were made. In the first attempt, the polyaminocaproic acid was treated with 30 ppm (parts by weight) of copper in the form of copper-I-iodide and 0.7% by weight of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole and in the second attempt only with 30 ppm of copper in the form of copper-I -iodide mixed.
In the first test, the residual strength after 3 hours of heating at 200 ° C. was 88% and after 16 hours of heating was 38%.
Without 2-mercaptobenzimidazole, the residual strength after heating for 3 and 16 hours was 54 and
14%.
Although the polyamides stabilized with 2-mercaptobenzimidazole and copper salts are preferably used for the production of automobile tire yarns, they are also very useful in cases in which articles made of polyamides are exposed to relatively high temperatures for a long time and a decrease in color brightness and elasticity is undesirable.
Such waste is e.g. B. undesirable in films and insulating materials for electrical cables.
