<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Thermoelectrically controlled, combined gas shut-off unit and pilot flame safety device
The invention relates to a thermoelectrically controlled combined gas shut-off unit and ignition flame fuse with an inlet valve which can be moved axially by means of a spindle and which in the open position counteracts the action of a spring force by an electromagnet, which is powered by a thermocouple that can be heated by an ignition flame is fed, is held, and in the closed position blocks the inlet opening of the unit from a space in communication with both the main flame and the pilot flame, in which a valve body adjustable by turning the spindle is arranged to regulate the gas flow.
Such a combined gas shut-off unit and pilot flame safety device offers the advantage that the use of a special shut-off device is avoided, which is usually designed as a plug valve that has to be operated separately and can only be sealed by using gas valve grease, which has the tendency to to be deposited in the relatively small flow channels to the pilot flame. Another advantage of combined gas shut-off units of the type described is that the gas supply to the pilot flame and to the main flame can be controlled by means of a single operating handle.
In a gas shut-off unit of the type described known from Austrian patent specification No. 201825, the valve body, which can be adjusted by rotating the actuating spindle, is adjustable to regulate the gas flow in the axial direction from and to a flat ring seat. The axial adjustment movement is generated here by a pin connected to the spindle, which slides on a correspondingly profiled control surface when the spindle is rotated, which must be designed very precisely and requires laborious manufacture. Furthermore, contaminants can accumulate on the flat annular seat surface, which cannot be removed by the axially striking valve body and which require frequent cleaning.
In this known gas shut-off unit, only the feed line to the main flame can be shut off by the control valve body.
The aim of the invention is to design a gas shut-off unit of the type described in the introduction in such a way that, with a simple structure, contamination on all parts of the unit is avoided and both the pilot flame and the main flame can be controlled with the control valve.
According to the invention, these objectives are essentially achieved in that, in a thermoelectrically controlled, combined gas shut-off unit of the type described in the introduction, a valve disc is arranged in the space connected to the pilot flame and the main flame, which has a central inlet opening through which the manually operable one is coaxial Spindle runs, an arc-shaped opening, the initial part of which can be rotated from a closed position via an opening connected to the pilot flame in an underlying support surface into an ignition position, in which the spindle can be moved in the axial direction for the purpose of moving the inlet valve into the open position and has a through hole which, in the angular position of the spindle which corresponds to the fully open passage of the gas shut-off unit,
lies in front of an opening connected to the main flame in the supporting surface, at the same time the end part of the circular arc-shaped opening still leaving the opening which is connected to the pilot flame free.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The valve disc cleans, as is the case with other types of gas shut-off and control devices, e.g. B. is known from German Patent No. 916281, the opening edges of the adjoining gas channels with each rotation due to the grinding movement, so that no contaminants can accumulate.
Another advantage of the gas shut-off unit according to the invention is that the gas pressure always acts on the upper side of the valve disc and thereby contributes to improving the seal.
The pilot flame can not only be shut off by the inlet valve (main valve), but also by the
Valve disc, so that complete tightness of the pilot flame line is still guaranteed if the inlet valve, e.g. B. as a result of a spring break, should become leaky.
Such a gas shut-off unit is inexpensive to manufacture because of its simple design, is robust and is only controlled safely by operating a handle on the spindle. Incorrect operation is ruled out because the inlet valve only remains open as long as the pilot flame is burning, i. H. if the
The spindle is retracted in the axial direction into the ignition position, from which position it can be turned further to open the pilot flame.
According to the invention, the openings to the main flame and pilot flame in the support surface are expediently surrounded by an O-ring which is inserted into a groove in the surface and forms a valve seat. As a result, a high level of tightness is achieved without the use of gas tap grease. The gas that flows from the inlet valve through the central inlet opening of the valve disc helps to increase the closing pressure between the valve disc and the O-rings.
According to the invention, it is also expedient to provide a through hole in the valve disc, the flow cross-section of which is small in relation to the cross-section of the opening in the support surface, which leads to the main flame, and that on the outflow side of the gas from a conical countersink in the disc is surrounded, the distance between this hole and the hole, which corresponds to a fully open main flame, is smaller than the diameter of the valve seat which surrounds the opening leading to the main flame. With the help of this small hole, a precisely defined minimum combustion is achieved in the main flame, without the risk of it being screwed down so far that it goes out; the conical surface on the outlet side prevents the small hole from being clogged with grease or dirt from the gas.
A preferred embodiment of a gas shut-off unit according to the invention is characterized in that the spindle for fixing the positions of the valve disc is firmly connected to a cam disc which, in the outermost position of the spindle, rests against an inner end surface in the housing of the shut-off unit and one or more facing it has radially protruding ribs which snap into corresponding recesses in the end face when the valve disc is fully open, the housing of the unit having an internally protruding guide edge running in the longitudinal direction of the spindle, which in the ignition position with a cut in the cam disc for control the axial displacement of the spindle into the unit can cooperate and which has an incision on the end face,
which allows the cam disk to rotate between two end positions when the gas shut-off unit is fully open or closed, which end positions are defined with the aid of teeth formed at the ends of a peripheral recess in the cam disk, which can strike the control edge within the incision. This achieves a robust fixing of the various positions of the valve spindle without the use of pins, as is the case with plug taps.
According to the invention, it is also expedient to provide two opposing, protruding guide lips on the spindle, which can interact with two of four cross-shaped slots in a collar protruding around the inlet opening of the valve disc, which is a guide for a between cam disc and valve disc forms the spindle attached coil spring.
The coil spring moves the spindle back in the axial direction. when the handle is released after the pilot flame has heated the thermocouple, so that the electromagnet holds the inlet valve open, and the cross-shaped slots ensure that a cover in which the spindle is attached can always be attached so that a scale can be attached which, in conjunction with a pointer on the spindle, indicates its position, is always facing up, regardless of the installation of the shut-off unit.
In order to reduce the friction when the valve disk is turned, this disk can, according to the invention, be coated with a friction-reducing substance such as Teflon on the side facing the support surface.
The invention is explained in more detail below with reference to the drawing. 1 shows a gas shut-off unit according to the invention, the individual parts being shown exploded, FIG. 2 shows a vertical section through the gas shut-off unit, FIG. 3 shows the valve disk in plan view, i. H. from

Support surface.
The gas shut-off unit consists of a housing with a lower part 1 and an upper part 2. The
The lower part has an outlet opening 3, which is connected to a main flame, not shown, and an inlet opening 4. The upper part 2 encloses a space in which a valve disc 5 is mounted on a spindle 6 above the lower part, the latter in one piece a cam plate 7 which normally abuts an inner end surface of the enclosed space. If the
Spindle having been rotated from the closed position to the ignition position with the aid of a handle 9, it can be displaced in the axial direction together with the cam disk 7, whereby an inlet valve 10 can press an inlet valve 10 downwards into the open position against the action of a spring 11.
In this
Valve position, a magnet armature 8 attached to the valve rests on an electromagnet 12, the
Current is supplied from a thermocouple, not shown, which is heated when the pilot flame is ignited.
The valve disk 5 has an upstanding collar with four slits 13 opposite one another in pairs, in which guide lips 14 attached to the spindle engage, so that the spindle is in the
Can be displaced in the longitudinal direction with respect to the valve disk 5, but not rotated without taking the valve disk with it. As can be seen from FIGS. 3 and 4, the valve disc has an elongated, circular arc-shaped hole 15, a circular large hole 16 and a circular smaller hole 17. Die
Valve disk 5 rests on a support surface 20 which, as FIG. 5 shows, has circular openings 18 and 19, of which the former is in communication with the pilot flame and the latter with the main flame.
The various positions of the valve disk 5 in relation to the openings in the support surface 20 can be seen in FIGS. 12-15, where the openings in the support surface are fully drawn out, while the holes in the valve disk are drawn in dotted lines. In FIG. 12, the valve disk is in the closed position, since no hole in the valve disk overlaps an opening in the support surface. A central hole 21 in the valve disc is, however, constantly in communication with the outlet side of the inlet valve 10 so that when this valve is opened, gas can flow through the hole 21 and helps to press the valve disc against the support surface.
If the valve disc is rotated into the position shown in Fig. 13, the gas can flow through the hole 15 and the opening 18 to the pilot flame as soon as the inlet valve is opened, which is done by moving the spindle in its longitudinal direction against the action of the spring 11 happens. When the pilot flame is ignited, it will heat up the thermocouple in the course of a very short time so that the electromagnet 12 can now hold the inlet valve open, even if the spindle 6 is returned to its original position. From the position according to FIG. 13, the spindle and the valve disk 5 can be rotated further into the position shown in FIG. 14, the hole 16 of the valve disk then being opposite the opening 19, so that gas to the main flame and at the same time gas through the opening 18 flows to the pilot flame.
As the valve disc continues to rotate, the amount of gas flowing through opening 19 to the main flame is reduced; but before the hole 16 has been rotated completely past the opening 19, the small hole 17 is guided over this opening so that the main flame is not extinguished. Fig. 15 shows the position of the valve disc with the smallest main flame. By turning the valve disc back into the closed position (Fig.
12) both the main and pilot lights are extinguished with a single movement.
The openings 18 and 19 are each of an O-ring 18 'or. 19 'surround; these rings form a valve seat and are inserted into grooves in the support surface 20.
If the spindle is not pressed into the housing by hand, the cam disk 7 is held against the inner end surface of the upper part 2 by a spring 22. The cam disk 7 has radially projecting ribs 23 which, in the open position of the valve disk (FIG. 14), are pressed into corresponding recesses in the wall of the upper part, so that the position corresponding to the fully open main flame is fixed. In the cylindrical wall of the upper part 2 a projecting guide edge 24 is formed which cooperates with an incision 25 in the cam disk 7 when the spindle and the valve disk are rotated into the ignition position (FIGS. 9 and 13).
The spindle 6 can thus only be moved in its longitudinal direction into the ignition position and can only be rotated when
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
it has been pressed into its outer end position by the spring 22. in which a notch 26 in the leading edge 24 allows the cam disk to rotate, u. between the closed position (FIG. 8), in which a tooth 27 rests against the guide edge 24 within the incision 26, into the position corresponding to the smallest main flame (FIG. 11). in which a corresponding tooth 28 rests on the leading edge 24.
The upper part and the spindle with cam disk can be set in four different angular positions with respect to the valve disk with the help of the two opposite guide lips 14 on the spindle, which snap into opposite slots 13 in the collar of the valve disk. A pointer 29 on the spindle and a corresponding scale on the upper part of the housing can always be arranged so that they are visible from above.
To reduce the frictional resistance to turning the valve disc, it can be coated with Teflon; this material and the O-rings can withstand temperatures that are significantly higher than the temperatures at which the use of plug taps is possible.
