Kunststoffmasse
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Plastic compound
The invention relates to improved plastic compositions and is described in detail herein with respect to plastic compositions made from synthetic resins based on polystyrene which are antistatic, i.e. H. in which the very undesirable effects of electrostatic charging do not occur during the usual extrusion of the molding.
Extensive tests in laboratories and factories carried out by manufacturers, processors and consumers show that the electrostatic patterns created at the time of the molding are the main source of the long-known problem of static dust pick-up in common polystyrenes.
The electrostatic field appears to be distributed in three dimensions throughout the molding so that the usual surface treatments not only require additional processing, but are also of limited value.
Although the electrostatic field decreases over time, it can last for many months, so that the buyer or consumer is bothered by the problems of dust accumulation resulting from the time of the molding long after the molding process, despite the use of dust jackets.
Fittings can appear particularly "dirty" due to the fact that the static dust absorption rarely occurs evenly. The absorption of dust is particularly strong at the points with a thin cross-section and strong curvature and in recessed areas, and it is precisely these that are particularly difficult to reach and clean. Characteristic and particularly undesirable fern-like or branched recording patterns are predominant even on the flat surfaces. The main source of the dirt is the atmosphere. Since electrostatic attraction leads to electrostatic retention, the ingested dust is held much more firmly than that which collects on any surface by simply settling down due to gravity.
A symmetrical shaped piece of polystyrene exposed to air collects and holds in place substantially the same amount of the dust pattern on its lower surface as on its upper surface.
Various phenomena have been used as criteria for the tendency of the material to acquire and retain an electrostatic charge. These include:
1) surface resistance,
2) resistance of the mass,
3) ash and artificial dust pick-up after rubbing,
4) reading on the electrometer after rubbing,
5) reading on the electrometer after compression molding,
6) Artificial dust pick-up after compression molding.
In the case of materials with a relatively low specific resistance (e.g. 106 ohm. Cm), fairly direct relationships between the above factors and the generation and maintenance of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
charge will be received. However, show in the destatized polystyrenes, which in the present case of
Are of interest and which have a much higher resistance, only factors 5) and 6) have a relationship to the atmospheric dust pick-up after molding - which is primarily of interest. The relationship with 5) is quite indicative.
With some tolerance for variations in the "atmospheric."
Dust "an excellent practical relationship between the actual behavior after a long time and experiments in an extremely short time after 6) was obtained when soot was used in a atomizing gun.
Many unsuccessful attempts have been made in the art to seek a direct relationship between destatizing abilities during deformation and factors 1) -4). Many materials, for which destatising properties have been claimed, have in the actual
Proven unsuitable in practice. Despite a superficial, clear simplicity, they are through
Rub. induced static effects probably much more indefinite in their effect than those below
Compression molding conditions induced. Depending on materials and the conditions of the friction agent, the
The type and orientation of the rubbing movement and other conditions can lead to very complex and unforeseen side effects.
In particular, it should be noted that compression-molded, synthetic resin compositions were produced which showed good results in the friction tests, but failed when they were subjected to the actually important tests in the atmosphere. Also, the dust accumulation created by rubbing is more of a smeary or blotchy pattern in contrast to the much more uncomfortable branching patterns. In addition, the use of destatizing agents, which produce good friction behavior through a hygroscopic film, can lead to stubborn retention of atmospheric dust through a simple adhesive effect.
In the present invention, the destatizing effectiveness was measured by the above-mentioned tests of exposure to the atmosphere and the use of atomized dust applied to the test pieces at various times after compression molding.
As will be described later, the undesirable dust accumulation effects of electrostatic charges on synthetic resin articles during molding can be avoided by following the teachings of this invention.
According to the invention, destatized molding compositions made of synthetic resin with high color stability are specified.
In particular, this invention provides destated polystyrene-based resin compositions which are characterized by a high degree of color stability.
Further features of this invention include the provision of a destatized resin composition wherein a synergistic agent is used to render a destatizing agent effective in relatively small amounts.
It is an object of the invention to provide a new class of useful compositions which are suitable for the compression molding process.
The plastic composition according to the invention for compression molding of destatized objects made of synthetic resins such as polystyrene, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyacrylic acid resin, polyamide, polybutadiene, polyvinyl halide and polyvinyl acetate, is characterized in that it contains up to 10 gel .-%, based on. the weight of the resin, an additive which consists of at least one alkanolamine and at least one metal salt of a carboxylic acid, the alkanolamine containing fewer than 9 carbon atoms in each alkanol or alkyl group and the carboxylic acid an alkyl mono- or an alkylene dicarboxylic acid with 4-18 carbon atoms is in the molecule and with 100 equivalents of salt and amine 10-70 equivalents of salt.
It has been found that there is a tendency to become electrically charged, which in particular many resins of the vinyl type have (including vinyls, vinylidenes, acrylics and similar polymers, including both homopolymers and copolymers, or mixtures of polymers and especially polystyrene), can be significantly reduced if up to about 10% by weight and preferably 1-3% by weight of an additive of the above composition is incorporated into the resin.
The alkanolamine can be a primary, secondary or tertiary alkanolamine of the formula

Contain carbon atoms.
The metal soaps used are colorless soaps of alkyl mono- and alkylenedicarboxylic acids with 4-18 carbon atoms in the molecule, the metal having a valence of more than 1 and preferably being one of the metals of groups 2 and 3 of the periodic table.
Metal soaps which are salts of pelargonic acid or nonanoic acid are particularly preferred; triisopropanolamine is preferably used as the amine.
The following example and the following table show particularly effective mixtures, each. however, the invention is not intended to be limited to these mixtures.
145.6 g of trisopropanolamine are mixed with 36.4 g of the zinc salt of pelargonic acid in a propeller mixer at high speed (8: 2 ratio). The mixture is made with polystyrene in one
Pfleiderer kneader mixed, adding a white pigment (TiO2) if required. The addition of amine and pelargonic acid salt forms 2% by weight of the resin. The mixture obtained is then extruded and molded by injection molding processes. The fittings were tested immediately after removal by blowing lamp soot with a spray gun and measuring with a Keithley voltmeter.
The moldings had a dust pattern estimated on an arbitrary basis to be 8-9 compared to dust patterns of 18-20 for polystyrene to which only triisopropanolamine was added.

It is possible to obtain temporary destatization effects by coating the mold surfaces of an injection mold with the destatization additives described herein. The coating can be conveniently applied by spraying.
The additives according to the invention influence the destatisation of z. B. polystyrene when used in very small amounts with only a very small decrease in the softening point of the polystyrene. It has been found, however, that this destatization is associated with a tendency to yellow when the piece is exposed to heat and moisture.
It has been found that the tendency to yellowing can be significantly reduced by adding a stabilizer such as bis (2-ethylhexyl) hydrogen phosphite in amounts of 0.021o to 0.5 equiv, based on the synthetic resin. The lower limit is critical. The upper limit is not that critical and is mainly a matter of cost for unclear fittings. If clear (non-pigmented) forms
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
pieces are desired, the range from 0.020/0 to 0.06elm is preferred.
Although many different heat and oxidation stabilizing compounds are commercially available, only a few have been found suitable for use as stabilizers in combination with the destatized compression molding compounds of the present invention.
In general, it has been found that bis-alkyl hydrogen phosphites, in which the alkyl groups contain 1 to 12 carbon atoms, and trihexyl phosphite can be used excellently for the purposes according to the invention.
Typical of the group of suitable stabilizers are dimethyl, diethyl, dibutyl, bis (2-ethylhexyl) and bis-lauryl hydrogen phosphites. The latter substance has been shown to have a distinct ability to produce moldings with superior clarity when present in concentrations of 0.05% based on the weight of the resin.
The destatising agents, which correspond to the composition mentioned in this description, can be incorporated into any of the following thermoplastic resin moldings or molding mixtures:
Polystyrene and modified polystyrenes, e.g. B. methyl styrene; Vinyls; Vinylidenes; Polyethylene; Polypropylene; Polyacrylates such as polymethyl, polyethylene, polybutyl and polyethylhexyl methacrylates, modified acrylics such as halogenated acrylates and polyacrylonitriles; Polyamides, such as nylon and modified

; Polybutadienes; Polyvinyl halides, fluoromonochlorethylene and polyvinyl chloride; and polyvinyl acetate.
It goes without saying that compatible mixtures of the resin polymers, as they are generally referred to as plastic alloys, can be used.
The mixture can be achieved by simple mechanical incorporation, such as by extrusion molding of the polymers or by copolymerization of the monomers.
Examples of copolymers based on styrene are styrene butadiene and styrene acrylonitrile. An example of a polymeric blend, also known as a styrene alloy, is a polymeric blend that includes polystyrene, polybutadiene, and polyacrylonitrile.
