Compass for adding up distances In the parent patent no. 207125, a version of a compass is described, in which this is for adding up distances with a display disc that interacts with a counting gear and is arranged on one leg of the compass and attached to and over the other leg with the help of one the circumference of the display disc guided thread is driven, which by up! winding is tensioned on a drum provided with a tension spring, and which is characterized in that, for the purpose of adding up the distances, the display disc is provided with a locking device, which consists of a very fine locking toothing on the inside of the disc that interacts with a locking pawl or a a wedge-shaped surface cooperating locking roller or a clamping screw.
This device has the advantage that you can continuously add up the individual lines of a broken line on maps, plans, etc. as well as the total of the respective thread length of the thread planimeter to determine the area.
In the practical handling, however, there are still some difficulties which make a further development of this subject seem appropriate. In a further development of the invention protected by the parent patent, it is therefore proposed that the two compass legs have a prismatic design and one of them is firmly connected to two rails, while the second is adjustably mounted on these rails.
A further improvement with regard to the locking of the display disc is given by the fact that the locking device cooperating with the fine toothing of the display disc is designed in the form of a clamping pin which can be pressed against the force of a spring against this toothing.
It has also proven to be useful to provide the prismatic compass legs with two semi-cylindrical recesses each for the thumb and middle finger of the hands of the operator and to arrange the clamping pin for the locking device in the area of the index finger on the corresponding compass leg.
Another advantage would be that the compass tips are interchangeable and can be replaced by glass plates with a mark or by sliding grippers that are beveled against one another and that can be fastened to the device by means of fastening webs with screws.
The compass tips should be shaped in such a way that they run from the attachment point on the prismatic compass legs parallel to the plane given by the two rails and, after being bent, perpendicular to this.
Another design of the compass tips would be that they run continuously inclined to the plane given by the two rails.
The advantages of these design improvements are that a better weight distribution, easier reading by means of horizontally positioned display panels and protection of the device parts that are exposed according to the embodiment of the parent patent are achieved. By using glass plates or sliding grippers, which are well suited for certain work (e.g. for folder sheets from new measurements), the pressure or the drawing is spared and the device can rest directly on them, so that fatigue from holding the Device cannot enter.
FIGS. 1-10 show an embodiment of the subject matter of the invention.
FIGS. 1 and 2 show the device in elevation, FIG. 3 in plan and FIG. 4 in cross plan. The

supply webs 20 are connected to the device by the screws 15, show. When using sliding grippers as well as glass plates, the device would lie flat on the card level.
The device consists of the two parallel guide rails 1 and 2 on which the prismatic compass leg 3 slides while the prismatic compass leg 4 is fixed with the guide rails.

Drum 6 for receiving the tape 7, which slides over the counting disk 8, housed. The counting disk 8 as well as the counting gear wheel 9 are provided with even graduation and are accommodated in part 3.
When the prismatic compass leg 3 moves on the rails 1 and 2, the band rolling down on 8 will turn this disk, and when the part 3 is returned, the band 7 rolls up automatically on the drum 6 due to the spiral spring provided therein. The numbered disk 8 moves the counting wheel 9 by engaging in its toothed pin 22 as a result of a pin 22 attached to the circumference

To increase the reading, a vernier 10 is available. The two rotary knobs 11 and 12 are used to reset the disks 8 and 9 to zero after the measurement.
The clamping pin 13 is used to lock the counting disks when 3 moves back on the rails.
