Gasket for cylinder heads of internal combustion engines
The present invention relates to a gasket for cylinder heads of internal combustion engines, which consist of several metal plates or foils and at least one asbestos layer arranged between these, the sheets being bent at the edges of the recesses so that the recesses are limited only by metal walls and the The sum of the sheet thicknesses is the same everywhere.
An improvement of the previously known seals brings the subject of the invention, in which the outer edge of the seal is formed by the beaded edge of the lower sheet and between the recessed edges of the middle sheet metal layer lying under the upper sheet and the outer edge of the seal and the edge of the recess to be sealed -or. Engage the bent flange parts of the two outer metal sheets so that the top of the seal is flush.
At least two thin sheets are arranged above the asbestos insert, of which the lower sheet is shorter at both ends than the asbestos insert, whereas the edges of the upper sheet, which extends over the entire length of the asbestos insert, against the edge zones of the asbestos insert left free by the lower sheet have turned. Under the asbestos insert an intermediate sheet of the same length is provided, which rests on a shorter sheet, the latter rests on the lower sheet, the outer edge of which is flanged at the top against the bent edge of the uppermost sheet.
The bottom sheet is advantageously bent on the inside against the edge zones left free by the shorter neighboring sheet and the edge of the uppermost sheet, and the entire sealing package is held together on the inside by a U-shaped sheet metal ring, the horizontal legs of which are flush with the upper or lower sheet. lower sheet.
In the drawing, an embodiment of the seal is shown. 1 shows a schematic top view of the head of a four-cylinder internal combustion engine and FIG. 2 shows a cross section in FIG

shows. A thin sheet 2 made of mild steel or copper, which is slightly shorter than the asbestos insert 1, is arranged above the asbestos insert. Above the sheet 2 is a second thin sheet 3 made of copper, the edges 3 ', 3 "of which are offset downward over the edges of the sheet 2, are in contact with the asbestos insert and extend to the edges of the latter.
Under the asbestos insert 1 is a thin sheet 4, for. B. made of mild steel, copper or aluminum, which extends over the entire length of the asbestos insert. A second thin sheet 5 made of the same material is arranged under the sheet 4 and extends from the left edge of the asbestos insert 1 to the right as far as below the edges of the sheet 2.
A third thin sheet of copper 6 runs parallel to sheet 5, forms a flanged edge 6 'on the left, which closes over the squat edges 3', and is offset upwards towards the sheet 4 on the right over the edge of the sheet above.
Another thin sheet 7 made of soft steel or copper finally includes the zones 3 "and 6" and holds the whole thing firmly together.
In the drawing, the left side of the figure corresponds to the circumference of the seal and the right side to the edge of the cylinder bore or another bore.
From the description and the consideration of the drawing it is readily apparent that the seal formed in this way is soft and has the same thickness everywhere.
In addition, the thin metal sheets give the seal great rigidity and prevent any deformation of the seal perpendicular to the cylinder axes (in the direction of the arrows f in FIG. 1).

It is also understood that the intermediate plate 4 can optionally be omitted without departing from the scope of the invention. The number of intermediate plates can also be increased; it could e.g. B. such as the asbestos insert 1 can be arranged.
The design according to the invention provides the following advantages:
The metal plates arranged above and below the asbestos insert give the entire gasket package considerable rigidity and, thanks to their bracing on the top, prevent this
Seal package can expand undesirably in the head level. The metal plates, which are arranged above and below the asbestos insert, are dimensioned and bent so that in every part of the
Sealing package an unchanged total thickness is maintained, u. between both before use and during use of the seal.
Furthermore, due to its structure, the inner edge zone of the seal package surrounding the cylinder bore has a somewhat reduced rigidity, which is quite desirable because it prevents the particularly high thermal stress in this zone from leading to thermal stresses that cause the seal to seize and theirs Service life reduced.
