Falls in den oben gegebenen Formeln I a bzw. I b n bzw. m eine gerade Zahl bedeutet, verwendet man Propen- (2)-yl- (3)-alkyläther, und falls in den obigen Formeln I a bzw. I b n bzw. m eine ungerade Zahl bedeutet, verwendet man Vinylalkyläther.

Process for the production of new polyene aldehydes The present invention relates to a process for the production of polyene aldehydes.
The inventive method consists in that an aldehyde of the general formulas:
EMI1.1
where n is an integer from 1 to 6, m is an integer from 3 to 6 and R alternately denotes the methyl group and hydrogen, starting with methyl, acetalized, then with an even-numbered n or m with a propen- (2) -yl - (3) -alkyl ethers and in the case of odd-numbered n or m condensed with a vinyl alkyl ether and the condensation product obtained is treated with acidic agents.
The starting aldehydes of the formula (I b) given above have a side chain with conjugated double bonds throughout; from formula (I a) it can be seen that one double bond has been replaced by the indicated triple bond. The radical R alternately denotes the methyl group or hydrogen, the R closest to the bond, which can be both double (formula I b) and triple (formula I a), always denotes methyl. If, for example, n is the number 3, then R in the first bracket expression is the methyl group, in the second hydrogen and in the third, adjacent to the carbonyl group, again the methyl group. In this case, the aldehyde comes from the formula:

-6 ', 6'-trimethyl-cyclohexen- (l') -in- (4) -diol- (3, 6) can be obtained with paratoluene sulfonic acid. The other starting aldehydes of the formula I a can themselves be obtained according to the information in the present description.
The above-mentioned 3-isopropoxy-2-methyl-propen- (2) -al- (1) is obtained, for. B. by condensation of ethyl orthoformate with propenyl ethyl ether in the presence of boron trifluoride ether with the formation of 1, 1, 3, 3-tetraeth-

EMI2.3
6 ', 6'-trimethyl-cyclohexen- (1) -yl] - (1) is a known compound. The other aldehydes of the formula Ib given above can be prepared according to the information in the present description.
The acetalization of the starting aldehydes is expediently carried out by reaction with orthoformic acid esters in the presence of an acidic catalyst, such as. B. phosphoric acid or p-toluenesulfonic acid. The acetals obtained are compounds with characteristic absorption maxima.
In the second stage of the process, the acetals formed are condensed with an unsaturated alkyl ether. If I a or I bn or m is an even number in the formulas given above, propene- (2) -yl- (3) -alkyl ethers are used, and if I a or I bn or m means an odd number, vinyl alkyl ethers are used.
The condensation is conveniently carried out in the presence of an inert solvent, such as. B.
Benzene, diethyl ether or petroleum ether. The condensing agent used is acidic catalysts such as. B. zinc chloride, boron trifluoride etherate, etc. The condensation products obtained are ether-acetals. They can be used for the next stage of the process without isolation.
In the third stage of the process according to the invention, the ether-acetals are subjected to an acid treatment. With hydrolysis and simultaneous elimination of alcohol, the corresponding aldehyde, which has conjugated multiple bonds, is formed. For acid treatment, aqueous organic or inorganic acids, such as. Acetic acid, p-toluenesulfonic acid, etc. can be used. Instead of the acids themselves, acidic salts such as. B. zinc chloride, sodium bisulfate can be used. The alcohol formed in the reaction is expediently continuously removed from the reaction mixture.
The end products obtainable by the process according to the invention are crystalline, orange, red, dark red or violet colored compounds with characteristic maxima in the absorption spectrum. They can be used as food coloring. The aldehydes with up to about 30 carbon atoms are also suitable as poultry feed additives for pigmentation of egg yolks, runs, beaks, skin, fat and meat. In addition, the end products are effective without a triple vitamin A bond.
