<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Process for the production of pyrotechnic bodies which are solid at service temperature
The invention relates to a method for the production of pyrotechnic bodies which are solid at the use temperature, in particular explosives or smokeless powders, from a colloidal homogeneous substance containing at least 25% by weight nitrocellulose.
As is known, these pyrotechnic bodies are produced by gelatinization either by hot rolling or some other mechanical action without solvents or with the aid of solvents.
In this production, it was previously necessary to use additives from two different classes at the same time, one of which is used for stabilization and the other for plasticization.
Substituted urea derivatives, such as "centra lit" (diethyldiphenylurea, dimethyldiphenylurea or methylethyldiphenylurea) are usually used as stabilizing substances, and substituted urethanes, such as diphenyl urethane, ethylphenyl urethane or dibutyl phthalate, etc., are used as softening substances.
In addition to the complication caused by the necessary use of two types of material, it should also be noted that the stabilizing substances commonly used, such as centralite, generally have an opposite effect to the softening substances. This is because these stabilizing substances make the pyrotechnic bodies hard and brittle, making them more difficult to work with, which has detrimental effects on the quality and possible uses of these bodies.
It has already been proposed to use various additives simultaneously for the stabilization and the plasticization of the pyrotechnic bodies; however, these various substances have only resulted in failure in practice. The addition of insoluble metal soaps to various types of disintegrants, possibly containing up to 10/0 nitrocellulose or 2% collodion wool, has also been recommended, but with these low nitrocellulose amounts the stabilizing and plasticizing effect does not occur at the same time.
The process according to the invention for the production of pyrotechnic bodies which are solid at the service temperature from a homogeneous colloidal substance with at least 25% by weight of microcellulose is characterized in that the substance is gelatinized after it has been given between 3 and 15% by weight for simultaneous stabilization and plasticization. -0/0 of the substance was added to at least one water-insoluble soap, which was produced by reaction of a fatty acid (palmitic acid, oleic acid or stearic acid, etc.) with compounds of alkaline earth metals or light metals or with bodies with a nitrogen atom capable of coupling, such as organic amines, this soap containing at least 30% by weight of a reaction product of oleic acid.
Here, alkaline earth metals are to be understood as meaning barium, calcium and strontium, and light metals are to be understood as magnesium and aluminum. As a body with a nitrogen atom capable of coupling one can z. B. in the unsubstituted or substituted state aniline, toluidine, xylidine, naphthylamine, diphenylamine, urea, hydrazine, urethane, and in the unsubstituted state dicyandiamide, diethanolamine, etc. use.
It has been shown, surprisingly, that each of the above soaps simultaneously has a stabilizing and softening effect for the nitrocellulose alone or in combination with explosive oils (nitrates of monohydric or polyhydric alcohols or their polymers, such as nitroglycerin, diethylene glycol dinitrate, etc.), which can be added either alone or in combination with crystallized explosives.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
This property allows a considerable simplification of the production and the reduction of the necessary procurement measures, which has considerable advantages in pyrotechnic and industrial terms.
In addition, the permissible percentages of the soaps are not restricted by the above-mentioned opposing effects of the usual stabilizing and softening substances.
Gelatinization is preferably carried out by kneading in a warm state without a solvent. The softening effect of the soaps is of course much more effective in this case. so that the substance to be gelatinized can be made soft as desired.
The various soaps and their mixtures have been subjected to very thorough trials, which have shown that certain of them are preferable to others.
So it is e.g. B. expedient that the soap contains the reaction products of at least two alkaline earth metals or light metals in combination. It is also useful that the reaction products of aluminum in the soap make up a maximum of 20% by weight of the total amount of soap. Finally, it is advisable that the soap consists of a mixture of reaction products of the alkaline earth metals or light metals, i.e. of insoluble metal soaps on the one hand and of bodies with a nitrogen atom capable of coupling on the other, the reaction products of the first type having at least the same weight in terms of quantity as the reaction products of the second type .
The method according to the invention allows the production of smokeless powders either starting from a larger amount of nitrocellulose or starting from a mixture which contains between 25 and 68% by weight of nitrocellulose and between 15 and 42% by weight of an explosive oil.
It also allows the production of explosives starting from mixtures to be gelatinized which contain between 25 and 68% by weight of nitrocellulose, between 15 and 42% by weight of fine explosive oil and between 5 and 45% by weight of solid explosives.
In this case, the presence of the soap not only has the above stabilizing and softening effect, but also a lubricating effect, which allows a very high proportion of crystallized explosives to be added to the mixture without the risk of explosion during production, which are normally very sensitive to friction and shock . As such crystallized explosives, certain organic explosives can be mentioned, such as trinitrotoluene, tetryl, penthritol, hexogen, etc.
Certain inorganic explosives can also be cited, such as ammonium or potassium perchlorate.
In the above-mentioned process for producing explosive substances, at least one oxygen-releasing salt, such as ammonium nitrate or an alkali nitrate, can be added to the mixture before gelatinization. A pyrotechnic mixture with thermal effect can also be added prior to gelatinization; H. a mixture which generates a pressure wave and / or a fire effect and z. B. can be formed by barium nitrate and aluminum powder.
The invention is illustrated below with the aid of a few examples, which are by no means restrictive.
Example 1: Preparation of a smokeless powder by gelatinizing nitrocellulose with the aid of a solvent:
A. Nitrocellulose is kneaded with the addition of ether / alcohol in a ratio of 2: 1 with a water-insoluble soap, which makes up 1 cp / o of its weight and consists of 65ego magnesium oleate, 20% aluminum stearate and 15% calcium stearate, until a homogeneous gelatin is obtained. This is then saved in
EMI2.1
B. After the method described above under A, a gelatin is processed which contains 4% of a water-insoluble soap, which consists of 60% magnesium oleate, 20,000 calcium stearate and 2cp / o barium palmitate, in combination with 4% of a reaction product of oleic acid with urea and diphenylamine .
Example 1 2: Production of a smokeless powder by gelatinizing a mixture of nitrocellulose and explosive oil (nitroglycerin) with the help of a solvent:
With the addition of acetone and cooling with water, an approximately 8% water-moist, 4cp / o nitroglycerin and 60% nitrocellulose-containing mixture is kneaded and homogenized with ff1 / o (based on the dry weight of the total composition) of a water-insoluble soap, which consists of 85% calcium oleate and 151o magnesium stearate and 2% (also based on the dry weight of the total composition) of a reaction product of stearic acid with diethanolamine and aniline.
The

Gelatine obtained in this way is then rolled into plates of the desired thickness in cooled cylinders and cut. After drying at around 400 ° C. to separate out the solvent, disks or rings are punched out of the plates, or these are cut into sheets or strips.
Example 3: Production of a smokeless powder by gelatinization without solvent of a mixture of nitrocellulose and explosive oil:
A. Nitrocellulose and then diethylene glycol dinitrate as well as the water-insoluble soaps and other reaction products mentioned below are introduced into a container filled with water and evenly distributed in this by stirring.

Combination of oleic acid or stearic acid with alpha-naphthylamine and urea. The water content of the above mixture is then reduced to about 307 ° in a centrifuge, whereupon gelatinization takes place without the aid of solvents through the combined effect of pressure and heat in a rolling mill.
The plates produced in this way from a colloidal horn-like powder mass are cut into strips or cubes or processed in the heat in a hydraulic extrusion press into profile pieces of the desired shape and, if necessary, post-treated by drying.
B. According to the method given under 3A above, a homogeneous thermoplastic colloid is obtained

After the mixture has been pre-dewatered in a centrifuge, the water content of the mass is reduced to about 8-10% using a screw press. The mass is then gelatinized in a hot rolling mill and finally processed into strands of the desired shape in a hot press.
B. According to the procedure given under 4A above, a mixture of 40% nitrocellulose,

The homogeneous mass that is maintained is then processed in a hot press to form pellets of the desired shape.
C. According to the method given under 4B above, pellets are produced using a mixture which contains 45% nitrocellulose, 33% nitroglycerin or diethylene glycol dinitrate, 9% nitro penta, 1 cp / o ammonium or potassium perchlorate and 3% calcium oleate.
Example 5: Production of explosives by gelatinization without solvents of a mixture of nitrocellulose, explosive oil and crystallized solid explosives with the addition of an oxygen-releasing salt:
After preparing a homogenized underwater mixture with 46.5% nitrocellulose, 33.5% nitroglycerin or diethylene glycol dinitrate, 16% nitropenta or hexogen, 4% of a water-insoluble soap with 881o calcium oleate, leo magnesium stearate and 21o aluminum oleate, the water content of the mixture is increased by centrifugation brought less than 30%. By subsequently sending the substance through a rolling mill several times, the water content is further reduced until no more squeezed water drips off.
At this point in time, an oxygen-releasing salt, such as ammonium or sodium nitrate, is added to the substance that is still water-containing in such a way that the introduction of salt is ended when the rolling process continues before gelatinization is achieved.
After all components have been homogeneously combined, the added salt content is between 5 and 45% of the final composition after gelatinization has ended.
Example 6: Production of explosives by gelatinization without solvents of a mixture of nitrocellulose, explosive oil and crystallized solid explosives with the addition of a pyrotechnic mixture with thermal effect:
The water content of a homogeneous mixture with 600b nitroglycerin and 4cp / o nitrocellulose is adjusted to about 20%. A water-insoluble soap, trinitrotoluene, and a mixture of aluminum powder and barium nitrate are then added to the mixture.
All components are evenly

mixed, whereupon the substance is gelatinized by repeated beating through a hot rolling mill until a homogeneous thermoplastic colloid is formed, which is obtained immediately after the rolling process in plates or by subsequent pressing in the form of bars or bodies of the desired length and shape.
