Process for the production of high molecular weight plastics which can be used as plastics
Polyethylenes
The invention relates to the production of high molecular weight polyethylenes which can be used as plastics and have molecular weights above 2000, preferably above 10,000. In general, even with appropriate catalyst concentrations, polyethylenes can be obtained with a molecular size which is above that which has hitherto been the upper limit for the technically accessible polyethylene was considered. This limit is approximately at molecular weights of around 50,000, whereby this number should not mean more than the indication that solutions of such polyethylenes have a certain viscosity.
The calculation of the viscosity number (i) (intrinsic viscosity) from this takes place in the present description on the basis of an equation described by Schulz and Blaschke (Journal for Practical Chemistry, Volume 158 [1941], Pages 130-135, Equation 5b, Page 132) was, the spec. Viscosity according to Fox, Fox and Flory, J. Am. Soc. 73, (1951), page 1901 was corrected. From this viscosity number, the average molecular weight of 50,000 given above was determined with the aid of a modified form of the method described by R. Houwink, Journal for Practical Chemistry, New Series 1957 (1940), pages 15-16,

: a = 1,235 was calculated for this new plastic.
In terms of such a definition of the molecular weight, with suitable catalyst combinations and concentrations according to the invention, polyethylenes with molecular weights of up to 3,000,000 and above can be obtained.
The polyethylenes obtained according to the invention are, as already stated, extremely high molecular weight. They have a softening point or melting point above 1300 C. They are completely insoluble in all solvents at room temperature. The lower molecular weight among them (up to a molecular weight of about 100,000) partially only dissolve above 700 ° C., the higher molecular weight (with a molecular weight above 100,000) partially only above 1000 C. The temperature resistance of the new products is greater than that of the well-known polyethylene. When the new products are heated to temperatures above 2500 C, they retain their white color, while the color of the known products between 2000 C and 2500 C changes to gray.
The persistence of. new products against oxidation by atmospheric oxygen is also larger.
The new polyethylenes show a high crystallinity, which is extraordinary for high molecular weight hydrocarbons. The crystallinity remains unchanged up to more than 1000 and only disappears near the softening point. As X-ray diagrams show, the degree of crystallinity is generally around 80% and is many times higher. Of course, lower values also occur.
In chemical terms, these are products that have a completely linear structure and have practically no branches. The products according to the invention contain a maximum of 3 methyl groups for every 100 methylene groups. In general, the pro

The tensile strength is at least 100 kg / cm2, often over 200 kg / cm2. The tensile strength in the unstretched state is more than 200 kg! cm2, in foils oriented towards stretching up to 3000kg / cm2.
The products can. without further ado B. between heated plates and clear, elastic and flexible plates or

Foils are processed. They are also suitable for processing in extrusion presses or injection molding. They can be stretched in the cold and can be pulled out in this way to tapes, wires or threads of high elasticity and strength, as they could never be obtained with polyethylene from other manufacturers. The products already show a noticeable tendency to fiber formation during processing. They can be spun into threads in the molten state by the methods customary in spinning super polyamide fibers such as nylon fibers. The threads made from the new polyethylenes can be used as fibers for industrial purposes.
Patent No. 192618 describes the production of high molecular weight ethylene polymers of plastic character, in which aluminum trialkyls are used as catalysts in addition to compounds of the metals of the 4th to 6th subgroups of the periodic table, including thorium and uranium, as catalysts.
The method of the invention consists in that in the production of high molecular weight polyethylene according to patent no. 192618 by polymerizing gaseous ethylene in the presence of mixtures of aluminum trialkyls and compounds of metals of the 4th to 6th subgroups of the periodic system, including thorium and uranium , as catalysts instead of or in addition to aluminum trialkyls, aluminum, zinc, magnesium or alkali
EMI2.1
Aluminum triphenyls, tritolyl, trixylyl, trinaphthyl or corresponding compounds of zinc, magnesium or alkali metals can be used as metal aryls or metal aryl alkyls. However, it is also possible to use compounds of the metals with aralkylene, d. H. Compounds in which the metal is attached to the aliphatic chain of the aralkyl, e.g. B. Benzyls or Phenyläthyls bound.
Finally, mixed metal alkyls and aryls can be used, i.e. compounds in which the metal is attached to both alkyl radicals, e.g. B. methyl or ethyl, as well as aryl or aralkyl, z. B. phenyl or benzyl, is bonded.
The organometallic compounds described are used according to the invention with compounds of the metals of the 4th to 6th subgroups of the periodic system, including thorium and uranium. So z. B. compounds of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, thorium, uranium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum and tungsten can be used.
Salts of titanium, zirconium or chromium are used with particular preference. Suitable compounds of the metals mentioned are: halides, e.g. B. chlorides or bromides, oxyhalides, z. B. oxychlorides, complex halides, e.g. B. complex fluorides, freshly precipitated oxides or hydroxides or organic compounds, e.g. B. alcoholates, acetates, benzoates or acetylacetonates. A particularly effective catalyst of the type according to the invention is obtained if, for. B. titanium or zirconium tetrachloride, oxychloride or acetylacetonate mixed with organic alkali compounds. Such a catalyst carries ethylene even at low pressures of less than 100 atm. and at temperatures below 1000 C very quickly into high molecular weight polyethylene.
The known high-pressure processes have the further disadvantage that only a relatively small amount of about 15 to 20% of the ethylene used is converted into polyethylene in one test run. According to the invention, however, the ethylene used is largely converted in one test run. In the process according to the invention, the ethylene does not need to be as pure as in the known processes.
The other working conditions are also the same as those of the parent patent. The method can be carried out at sub-atmospheric, atmospheric, or super-atmospheric pressure, with pressures above 100 atm. need not be used, although of course the effect of the new catalysts on the ethylene remains fundamentally unchanged if the pressure is increased to any level that is technically possible. It is advantageous to work at pressures of 1 to 10 atm.
The new polymerization catalysts are already effective at room temperature and below. It is advantageous to work at a higher temperature, in particular above 500.degree.
Instead of pure ethylene, ethylene-containing gas mixtures can easily be processed according to the invention.
You can work in the presence of solvents, in particular higher saturated hydrocarbons such as hexane or paraffin, or aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene.
Example 1: 10 g of sodium phenyl, prepared according to Zeitschrift für Angewandte Chemie, Volume 49, 456 (1936), which was suspended in 30 cm3 of hexane, were mixed with 1.8 g of titanium tetrachloride and 200 cm3 of hexane under nitrogen and ground in a vibrating ball mill for 1 hour. The black suspension formed was transferred to a 500 cm3 autoclave and 60 g of ethylene were added. The autoclave was then heated to 1000 ° C. while shaking. After 24 hours the pressure had dropped to 20 atm and the experiment was terminated. After cooling, 5 g of ethylene were recovered unchanged.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
nen. The autoclave contained 52 g of granular, gray-colored polyethylene suspended in hexane.
For cleaning, the polyethylene, after it had been separated from the solvent by filtration, was boiled with methanolic hydrochloric acid, the catalyst residues contained in the polyethylene being dissolved out. The product was then washed with methanol and acetone to remove any hydrochloric acid still adhering. A pure white product was thus obtained.
Example 2: 30 cm3 of a suspension of sodium phenyl in hexane containing 10 g of sodium phenyl were mixed with 2.3 g of chromium (III) acetylacetonate and 50 cm3 of hexane and ground in a vibrating ball mill to a fine black suspension for 2 hours. This was filled into a 200 cm3 autoclave under nitrogen, and 35 g of ethylene were injected. The autoclave was then shaken vigorously at a temperature of 100-1100 ° C. for 40 hours. The pressure had dropped to 20 atm in the course of this time. After cooling, 6 g of ethylene were blown off.
The autoclave contained a thick slurry of polyethylene in hexane which, after the usual work-up described in Example 1, gave 26 g of soft, spongy polyethylene, which softened after heating to 110-1300C.
Instead of titanium tetrachloride or chromium III acetylacetonate, zirconium tetrachloride, zirconium IV acetylacetonate, thorium acetylacetonate, uranium hexachloride or chromium III chloride can also be used.
Example 3: 2.1 g TiCl4 (1.2 cm3) = 11.4 mM were added to a suspension of 11.7 g Al (C6H5) g = 45.6 mM in 500 cm3 aliphatic *. As soon as the Tical4 was added, the previously white aluminum triphenyl suspension turned brown. After shaking on the vibrating mill overnight, only about 15% of the chlorine bound to titanium was still in the centrifuged solution.
*) Diesel oil obtained by Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and then hydrogenated.
The entire suspension was diluted with 500 cm3 of aliphatic and placed in a 5 liter stirred autoclave. Ethylene is injected up to a pressure of 20 atmospheres and heated slowly. After the pressure had risen slowly in the beginning, it fell between 30 and 400 C to 16 atm. The pressure was brought back to 20 atmospheres by again forcing in ethylene and then fell only slowly — within a day — to 18 atmospheres. After the unreacted ethylene had been blown off, the autoclave was opened.
The reaction mixture was black and mushy. After suctioning off the aliphatic, boiling with methanolic hydrochloric acid, suctioning off and drying, 85 g of a gray polyethylene were obtained. A total of about 150 g of ethylene were used.

The black suspension formed was transferred to a 500 cm3 autoclave and the autoclave, mixed with 70 g of ethylene, was heated to 1000 ° C. with shaking. After 20 hours the pressure had dropped to 25 atm. The attempt was canceled. After cooling, 7 g of ethylene could be recovered. The autoclave contained 59 g of granular, gray-colored polyethylene suspended in hexane. The cleaning was carried out as described in Example 1.
Example 3: A suspension of about 7 g of sodium phenyl in 100 cm3 of benzene was admixed dropwise with 5 g of diethylaluminum chloride at 0-100 ° C. with vigorous stirring.
After a reaction time of 1 hour, the sediment was centrifuged off and the benzene solution was freed from benzene by evaporation in vacuo. The residue contained no chlorine and, according to analysis of a compound with the composition HgCssAI (CHg) 4, 4 g of the phenylaluminum diethyl produced in this way were ground together with 4 g of zirconium tetrachloride and 200 cm3 of hexane in a vibrating ball mill for two hours, the brown-black suspension was transferred to a 500 cm3 autoclave and 75 g of ethylene pressed on. The autoclave was then shaken at a temperature of 90-1000 ° C. for 35 hours. During this time the pressure had dropped to 30 atmospheres. After cooling, 10 g of ethylene were blown off. The autoclave contained 62 g of asbestos-like polyethylene.
The cleaning was carried out as indicated in Example 1.
Example 6: 10 g of zinc diphenyl (prepared according to the process described in the reports of the German Chemical Society 46, 1675 [1913]) were ground under nitrogen with 4.5 g of titanium tetrachloride and 50 cm 3 of hexane in a vibratory ball mill for 3 hours. The black suspension formed was filled into a 200 cm3 autoclave and 42 g of ethylene were injected. The autoclave was then shaken vigorously at a temperature of 1000 ° C. for 35 hours.
