In front-wheel drive vehicles, the engine is usually installed transversely in the front engine compartment for many reasons.
The width of the wheel arches, which must give the front wheels space for steering deflections, limits the space for the transversely installed engine. It is not possible to accommodate engines with more than four cylinders in series, even if the transmission is no longer in the extension of the crankshaft, but is arranged parallel to it in front of or behind the engine.
Also in front-wheel drive motor vehicles there is a tendency towards larger and more powerful engines with a number of cylinders over 4. It is known to arrange engines with six cylinders in a V shape in front of the front axle (e.g. ALFA ROMEO 164, LANCIA THEMA V6).
The resulting design has the disadvantage of a high and far forward center of gravity and a relatively high bonnet, which limits the driver's view, impairs contemporary lines and can be aerodynamically unfavorable.

knows. The two cylinder blocks of the boxer engine have a front-facing and rear-facing crankcase lying in a forward-downward inclined plane
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Rows of cylinders. The power transmission between the engine and the gearbox located under the engine is done by spur gears. Due to the arrangement of the engine far in front of the front axle, the center of gravity of the engine transmission block is far in front of the front axle and is still relatively high and hinders an aerodynamically favorable design of the bonnet.
The aim of the innovation is to propose a design for front-wheel drive motor vehicles that allows multi-cylinder engines to be used without the disadvantages mentioned.
EMI2.1
According to the innovation, the boxer engine is designed so that the cylinder blocks are at an angle of 150 to less than 180 degrees to each other, i.e. they are not exactly in one plane. To a certain extent, the engine is "wrapped" around the transmission and differential, which means that the bonnet can be made particularly flat and short.
Not only the position of the center of gravity wins through this construction, but also the aerodynamic (and beautiful) shape of the bonnet. As the accessories (air filter, intake ducts, exhaust manifold, etc.) can be made particularly flat in a boxer engine, the front section is also very low, which benefits air resistance and thus fuel consumption.
In a first advantageous embodiment, the transmission is arranged in front of the differential in the direction of travel. This makes it possible to provide an output for the rear axle in a further training at the rear end of the differential.
In another advantageous embodiment, the transmission is arranged behind the differential in the direction of travel. This means that the center of gravity of the drive block can be placed behind the front axle and a simple shift linkage can be used.

In the following, the innovation is explained using illustrations.

Embodiment, figure. 4: front end of a motor vehicle according to the innovation in a second embodiment.
The drive block of a front-wheel drive motor vehicle shown in FIGS. 1, 2 essentially consists of a boxer engine 1, a manual transmission 5 and a differential 6.
From this, the wheel drive shafts 8, which represent the front axle, lead to the front wheels 7.
The engine 1 has two cylinder blocks 12, each with four cylinders, for example, between which the crankshaft 13 is located.

is therefore located under the right half of the engine 1 in the direction of travel, so that its output acts directly on the centrally arranged differential 6, so that the two wheel drive shafts 8 can be of the same length. Of course, the transmission 5 could also be located under the left half of the engine.
In the exemplary embodiment shown, the cylinder blocks 12 of the engine 1 are inclined slightly forwards and downwards

<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
It can be seen that this arrangement allows the bonnet 10 to be designed to be flat and sloping and that the center of gravity 11 of the engine transmission block comes to lie somewhat behind the front axle.
FIG. 3 shows a variant of the embodiment of FIGS. 1, 2, which corresponds to FIG. 1, 2 and differs from it only in that the cylinder blocks 12 ′ are not located in one plane, but an angle of less than 180 Include degrees with each other, whereby the space requirement of the engine gear block is further reduced, ". The gear is designated 5 'and the differential 6'.
In the second embodiment (FIG. 4), the motor is collectively designated 20. It is a six, eight, ten or twelve-cylinder engine with a front cylinder block 21 and a rear cylinder block 22, on which a common intake tract 23 is placed on top. Connected to the clutch housing 24 is a downward gear output 25, which

Drive shaft 28 to the rear axle, not shown, so this is an all-wheel drive motor vehicle. Finally, with 29 and 30 the front and rear exhaust pipe is designated. With this arrangement, the center of gravity 31 and the bonnet 32 come to lie very low.
For comparison, a motor vehicle according to the prior art with, for example, a V-6 cylinder engine is indicated by dashed lines in this illustration, the corresponding reference numerals are provided with an apostrophe. At the height of the arrival
