Method and device for the decomposition of alkali amalgam
The invention relates to the production of caustic alkalis, starting from alkali amalgams, which have been obtained by electrolysis in a cell with a mercury cathode.
The decomposition of the alkali amalgam is usually carried out in an elongated cell, in
Presence of catalysts that come into contact with the amalgam and the aqueous solution of the
Alkalihydroxydes are carried out.
It is known that the weaker the decomposition reaction, the faster it proceeds
Resistance of the cell is. For this reason, the catalysts are immersed in the amalgam in such a way that the largest possible contact area is achieved. It is also known to cause the amalgam to circulate in order to permanently renew this surface and thereby promote decomposition; this result is achieved by the circulation of the amalgam, the layer of which is broken up by flowing in thread-like streams along the catalyst. In the form in which it has been implemented up to now, this method can only be carried out when using thick layers, which requires the immobilization of relatively large amounts of mercury.
The method and the device according to the invention are aimed at avoiding this drawback and at the same time ensuring better electrical contact between the amalgam and the decomposition catalyst. The invention makes use of the property of flat, amalgamable surfaces, of being easily wetted by mercury, which spreads and flows in a very thin layer.
According to the method according to the invention, the flow of the amalgam is systematically maintained in a thin layer over a conductive and amalgamable surface and, with the help of this surface, an extensive contact is maintained between the amalgam and the catalyst in order to reduce the extent of direct contact between these two to complete.
In the device that is used to carry out the process, the surface over which the amalgam flows consists of a metallic plate, against which a catalyst body in the form of a catalyst over its entire surface
Lattice work (or grate) is pressed, the whole being housed in a room which contains the alkali hydroxide solution. To ensure good contact between the catalyst and the plate, the lower one is
The surface of the latticework is advantageously smoothed and pressed against the plate by mechanical means. Depending on the capacity of the
In the system, several elements consisting of the plates and the latticework can be grouped in series, in parallel or in parallel series.
According to one embodiment of the invention, the bottom of the cell is used as an amalgamable surface over which the mercury flows in contact with the catalyst body.
This latter consists advantageously of independent pieces, e.g. B. in the form of rods, which are inserted into crossbeams and through a
Screw which rests on the lid of the cell, are pressed against the bottom of the cell.
Several embodiments of such a device are shown schematically in the drawing, for example: FIG. 1 shows in cross section and FIG. 2 in side elevation a decomposition element formed from a plate and a latticework. 3 to 6 show different ways of grouping such elements in a common space. 7 and 8 show, in longitudinal section and in cross section, respectively, a device in which the amalgam moves on the floor of the cell itself.
The device shown in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises a flat rectangular plate a, the three edges b of which are bent slightly upwards, while the fourth edge c is bent downwards to form a flat drainage channel. The plate can be made of pure iron, copper, steel or any other conductive and amalgamable material. The latticework made of non-amalgamable material d is attached to the plate a.
One surface of the latticework is carefully smoothed so that it has a completely flat surface that ensures contact with the latticework plate. The attachment, preferably rigid, is through the bolts e or through

arranged on the other and provided on their upper surface with notches c which are inserted into corresponding notches of the cross bars d.
A metal armature e rests on these crossbars and absorbs the pressure of a screw f adjustable by a screw nut g, the screw nut being fastened to the upper wall h of the apparatus.
The device described is of great importance
Simplicity; it easily allows the essential intimate contact between the surface a and the elements b of the latticework to be secured or, if necessary, restored.
