EMI1.1
It is known that a voltage drop occurs in grid-controlled discharge vessels which is almost independent of the current flowing through it and, in the case of discharge vessels filled with gas or vapor, is of the order of magnitude of about 20 volts. If, for the purpose of regulating the consumer circuit, as is often the case with theater lighting, a grid-controlled discharge vessel is connected in series with the consumers, the maximum voltage available to the consumers is a voltage that is lower than the voltage drop in the discharge vessel Mains voltage.
This leads to the conclusion that lamps whose nominal voltage also differs from the mains voltage must be used, i.e. H. normal incandescent lamps cannot be used. If one were to use lamps with a nominal voltage corresponding to the mains voltage, they would give a strong reddish light even with full control of the discharge vessel, which is particularly undesirable in theater lighting because of the upstream color filter. Another disadvantage of this type of control is that even at the highest control level, i.e. when the discharge paths are fully controlled, one still has to accept the power loss corresponding to the voltage drop across the discharge paths.
According to the invention, these difficulties are overcome in that a transformer is connected upstream, which is dimensioned so that the full line voltage is applied when the discharge vessels are fully activated, a changeover switch being provided, by means of which the consumer circuit is connected directly to the supply network can be. The invention initially makes it possible to use normal lamps that correspond to the mains voltage. This consideration is essential when purchasing replacement lamps which, as is known, are not readily available commercially for abnormal voltages. The fact that the lamps can be connected directly to the mains at the highest control level, which experience has shown to work with for the longest time, enables considerable energy savings to be achieved.
In addition, the discharge vessels are spared, which has the effect of extending their service life.
The transformer can be designed either as an autotransformer or as a transformer with separate windings and must increase the voltage by the amount that corresponds to the voltage drop occurring in the entire circuit. The changeover switch, which allows the consumer circuits to be connected directly to the mains, is expediently built so that it works without interrupting the current. It is advantageously controlled as a function of the control devices for the grid control. This can be done either mechanically by any gear or purely electrically, for example by supplying a control current to an electromagnetic switch of known type through an auxiliary contact on the switching arm of the grid regulator. A combination of mechanical and electrical controls is also possible.
When switching, a bypass can also take place using resistors that are switched on for a short time.
In the drawing, a control for incandescent lamp circuits is shown as an embodiment of the invention. The step-up transformer with the windings, which is designed as an autotransformer, is located between the incandescent lamp circuits 6 and the mains conductors 1 and 2. 3 and 9 and the grid-controlled discharge vessel 5. The transformation ratio of the autotransformer is, as already mentioned above, selected so that with the greatest possible degree of modulation of the discharge

In the exemplary embodiment shown, the grid potential is tapped off at a voltage divider 7 which is connected to a direct current network. As soon as the voltage divider 7 has reached a position that corresponds to the highest degree of modulation of the discharge vessel 5 and thus the greatest brightness of the lamps 6, the contact piece 10, which is inevitably movable with it, closes the contacts 11 and 12, whereby a current in the switching coil-? J of the Sehalters comes about. The switch 8 is turned to the left against the tensile force of the spring 14, so that the incandescent lamps 6 now lie directly on the mains conductors 1 and 2 with the transformer and the discharge vessel switched off.
