Description

Process for the production of a reagent used to detect mustard.
The invention relates to a method for producing a reagent used to detect mustard and essentially consists in mixing iodine, starch and iodine monochloride.
The method can advantageously be carried out in such a way that enough of an aqueous iodine chloride solution is added to an iodine starch solution that the blue color of the starch just disappears or turns into a brown color. It is already known that the iodine starch reaction is prevented by chlorine iodine.
You can add an iodate to the mixture, e.g. B. potassium iodate, add to make the reaction even more sensitive. If such a reagent is brought together with mustard or with substances to be examined for mustard, the mustard is oxidized by the iodine monochloride, whereby hydrochloric acid and hydroiodic acid are formed. Since the iodine monochloride has now disappeared from the solution, the blue color of the iodine starch reappears. The iodate, which may be added, and the hydrogen iodide formed during the conversion of mustard into iodine monochloride, give free iodine, which supports the blue coloration of the starch.
PATENT CLAIMS:
